The Toronto Maple Leafs took care of some more summer business on Monday, signing forward Jacob Quillan to a one-year, two-way deal for $850,000. The 24-year-old spent most of the second half of last season in the NHL as a fourth-liner after scoring at nearly a point-per-game pace with the AHL Toronto Marlies, but head coach Craig Berube spoonfed minutes to the speedy forward instead of giving him more of an offensive opportunity.
In 23 games with the Leafs, Quillan had three points (1 goal, 2 assists), but after the season, he returned to the Marlies and was a key part of their Calder Cup Championship run, with nine points (3 goals, 6 assists) in 19 playoff games.
According to CapWages, the two-way deal is for $850,000 at the NHL level, and $350,000 at the AHL level. Quillan is still waiver-exempt, which will allow him to go up and down from the minors. After next season, he will become an arbitration-eligible RFA, but will not be waiver-exempt.
With the addition of a large volume of bottom-six forwards in free agency last week, the challenge for Quillan to crack the NHL roster will be great in September, but if he puts up another quality campaign in the AHL, it is likely that he will get more of a look than he did from Berube.
The NHL career of former Leaf David Kampf appears to be over. The 31-year-old center signed a three-year deal with HC Litvinov in the Czech Extraliga on Monday. Kampf played four seasons with the Leafs after being signed as a free agent in 2021. Primarily a checking center and penalty killer, his best season in Toronto was his first season, where he scored 11 goals in 82 games, but his totals declined over his tenure with the Leafs. GM Brad Treliving signed his to a four-year deal after taking over from Kyle Dubas in 2023, a deal that did not age well, as his usage declined under Berube in 2024-25.
After being placed on waivers and demoted to the AHL, Kampf and Toronto mutually agreed to terminate the remaining two years of his contract, so he could sign a one-year deal with the Vancouver Canucks. He played 38 games with Vancouver before being traded at the deadline to Washington, where he played just two games.
