Leafs Top Prospects – #21 Sam McCue

The Toronto Maple Leafs organization has drafted and developed a number of youngsters currently playing in the NHL (Auston Matthews, William Nylander, Morgan Rielly, Matthew Knies), but the club under former GM Kyle Dubas and current GM Brad Treliving had different ideas of what kind of prospects they wanted to populate the organization with. There has been a slow weeding out process of the smaller Dubas prospects in favor of predominantly larger forwards and defenseman that fit the traits that Treliving is looking for

As we’ve done on a yearly basis, we are ranking the club’s top prospects over the upcoming weeks based on their progress in either the NCAA, CHL, Europe, ECHL, or AHL, and their potential to make the Leafs roster and make a contribution in the future.

Players are eligible for the list if they have not played more than 40 NHL games and are 25 years old or younger:

McCue was selected with the middle of the Leafs three seventh-round picks at the 2024 NHL Draft in Las Vegas. The Sudbury, ON native struggled in his first season with the OHL’s Peterborough Petes, with one assist in 33 games, but made some strides in his draft year, scoring 11 goals in 34 games with the Petes before being dealt to Owen Sound, where he posted similar numbers (12 goals in 34 games).

The 19-year-old blossomed last season with the Attack and after being traded for the second year in a row to Flint. Between the two clubs, he scored 36 goals in 55 games, but after the deal scored at almost a goal-per-game pace with the Firebirds (18 goals in 20 games).

Elite Prospects Draft Guide describes McCue as a player with a motor and endless energy, who “skates hard after every puck, collides with every opponent, and battles for every inch of ice.”

The Leafs may have found a very useful energy forward, and will be tracking McCue in his final OHL season with his fourth OHL club, as he was traded to the Brantford Bulldogs in June.
