The Toronto Maple Leafs organization has drafted and developed a number of youngsters currently playing in the NHL (Auston Matthews, William Nylander, Morgan Rielly, Matthew Knies), but the club under former GM Kyle Dubas and current GM Brad Treliving had different ideas of what kind of prospects they wanted to populate the organization with. There has been a slow weeding out process of the smaller Dubas prospects in favor of predominantly larger forwards and defenseman that fit the traits that Treliving is looking for
As we’ve done on a yearly basis, we are ranking the club’s top prospects over the upcoming weeks based on their progress in either the NCAA, CHL, Europe, ECHL, or AHL, and their potential to make the Leafs roster and make a contribution in the future.
Players are eligible for the list if they have not played more than 40 NHL games and are 25 years old or younger:

Because of Toronto’s penchant for trading future draft picks under both Dubas and Treliving, the club continues to be a big player in the undrafted free agent market, which is not guaranteed to bear fruit. The Leafs were able to one of the more promising undrafted free agents in the 2024 college UFA class in center Jacob Quillan.
A native of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Quillan played three seasons for Quinnipiac University and scored the game-winning overtime goal to beat Matthew Knies and the University of Minnesota for the NCAA Championship in 2023. After posting a career-high 46 points (17 goals, 29 assists) in 39 as a senior, the center was pursued heavily by a number of NHL clubs, but signed with the Leafs on a two-year, entry-level contract.
The 23-year-old has the size ( 6’0”, 201-pound) and skating ability capable of playing in the NHL, and is equally adept in the offensive and defensive zones. Quillan quickly adapted to the professional game, scoring 37 points (18 goals, 19 assists) in 67 games with the AHL Toronto Marlies, and earned a one-game callup to the Leafs in January.
With the NHL club having many options up the middle in the bottom six in Nicolas Roy, Scott Laughton, Max Domi, and Dakota Joshua, the path to the NHL may be difficult this season, but an improvement at the AHL level in 2025-26 will likely earn him consideration for an NHL spot going forward.
