The Toronto Maple Leafs will be looking to bounce back from a three-game losing skid against the Los Angeles Kings at Scotiabank Arena on Thursday, but will have to do it without team captain Auston Matthews and goalie Anthony Stolarz.
Matthews left Tuesday’s 5-3 loss in Boston in the second period after a hit from Bruins defenseman Nikita Zadorov and did not return. On Thursday, head coach Craig Berube said that the Leafs top center was not definitive, but indicated that he will be out at least a week with a lower-body injury.
“”It’s kind of like one of those things. He could come in a couple of days from now, feeling a lot better. Hopefully he’s good to go, but we’ll see.” Berube said. ‘But it could be as long as a week.”
Stolarz was pulled for the second game in a row after allowing three first-period goals against the Bruins, and after the game, Berube indicated that he was pulled due to an upper-body injury. On Thursday, the Leafs head coach indicated that Stolarz is day-to-day, and the club has recalled goalie Artur Akhtyamov from the AHL Toronto Marlies, and center Scott Laughton has been placed on injured reserve retroactive to November 8th.
Joseph Woll made 25 saves in a 3-2 overtime loss to the Griffins on Wednesday, but the fact that he was not recalled likely means that he will play again in Grand Rapids on Friday. Hildeby will see action in his fourth straight game for the Leafs.
According to David Alter of the Hockey News, John Tavares has moved up to the top line between Matthew Knies and William Nylander, while Max Domi has replaced him on the second line between Nick Robertson and Bobby McMann.
The other lineup changes appear to be Calle Jarnkrok stepping in on the fourth line with Steven Lorentz playing center and Sammy Blais, and Dakota Mermis replacing Philippe Myers on the bottom pairing with Oliver Ekman-Larsson.
In other news that was only a matter of time before it happened, the Leafs officially announced that center David Kampf would be placed on waivers for the purpose of terminating his contract. Once he clears waivers on Friday, the 30-year-old center will become an unrestricted free agent, and the Leafs will clear $1.25 million this season off of the salary cap and $2.4 million off the books in 2026-27.
Kampf was simply not a fit with the Leafs, who ironically are short-handed up the middle with the injuries to Matthews and Laughton. He will likely get feelers from other NHL clubs looking for center depth on a one-year deal, but he will likely not get anywhere close to his salary with Toronto.
