Quick Hits: Big Day for TK at World Championships

The Lehigh Valley Phantoms face a winner-takes-all playoff game on Sunday evening. Travis Konecny has a big day at the IIHF World Championship tournament. Hall of Fame center Eric Lindros recounts his playing career in Philadelphia. All of this and more await in today’s Quick Hits for May 11, 2025.

Worlds: Konecny Steps up for Team Canada

Flyers winger Travis Konecny enjoyed a three-point game to earn Best Player honors to Team Canada on Sunday. Canada dispatched pesky Team Latvia, 7-1.

In the process, Konecny registered even-strength and shorthanded tallies. Later, he collected the primary assist on Mackin Celebrini goal.

Canada trailed first in the opening period. A Konecny deflection at 9:30 tied the score. Flyers defenseman Travis Sanheim and Penguins captain Sidney Crosby drew the assists. The Canadian side started to take over the match. At 19:36 of the middle frame, Konecny intercepted the puck and moved in to score an unassisted shorthanded goal. Canada opened a four-goal lead. Flyers winger Tyson Foerster was the Team Canada player in the penalty box (tripping) at the time.

Sunday’s tilt was an eventful one for Konecny. Early in the second period, officials assessed the Flyer a double-minor (two for boarding, two for roughing). Konecny attempted to exit the box before the penalty clock expired. Meanwhile, Crosby popped a Latvian player and knocked off his helmet.

Team Canada is now 2–0-0 in the tournament. The Canada squad is idle on Monday. Samuel Ersson and Team Sweden (2-0-0) take on arch-rival Finland on Monday.Jacob Markstrom is the expected starting goalie for Tre Konor against the Finns.

Atlantic Division Semis: Phantoms in Hershey for Game 5

The math is simple, the process is difficult. If the Lehigh Phantoms defeat the two-time defending Calder Cup champion Hershey Bears on Sunday evening (5 p.m. EDT), Ian Laperriere’s team will move on to the Atlantic Division Final. Lose and the season is over.

After Friday’s 6-4 home loss, Laperriere said Cal Petersen would start in goal in the best-of-five series finale. Parker Gahagen is injured. Carson Bjarnason has not played in more than a month. The goalie prospect dealt with a nagging injury late in the Western Hockey League regular season and playoffs. Bjarnason attempted to play through the issue with little success. He will back up Petersen on Sunday.

Philadelphia prospects Jett Luchanko and Alex Bump roared out to fast starts in the first round of the playoffs. The Hershey series has proven much tougher. Luchanko has one point (0g, 1a) through four games, while Bump looks for his first point of the series. Conversely, Phantoms defenseman Emil Andrae (five assists) currently leads all defensemen in playoff assists to date. Winger Zayde Wisdom has scored three goals (two shorthanded, one even strength) in the series. Jacob Gaucher notched one shorthanded and one even strength goal across Games Three and Four.

    1. I seem to be locked out too…with no explanation. Weird.

It sounds like the Phantoms played an elimination game last night. Did they win? Why cant I find the scorer anywhere?
