Upper Deck Showcase: Dorwart Represents Flyers
Upper Deck and the National Hockey League Players’ Association (NHLPA) will host the 15th annual NHLPA Rookie Showcase on September 3, at MedStar Capitals Iceplex in Arlington, Virginia. Karsen Dorwart will represent the Flyers at the event.
Reminder: The Showcase event is NOT a hockey game nor a training camp. It’s solely a photo opportunity event and publicity interviews for the new Upper Deck card series prior to the season. It’s not open to the public. However, some media attend. I was a bit surprised that the NHLPA/Upper Deck did not tab Alex Bump as the Flyers’ rookie rep. Bump seems to have the strongest case for an opening night roster spot of all the rookie hopefuls coming to training camp this September. Dorwart has a chance but is more of a dark horse. Moreover, Bump projects to play a bit higher in the lineup — more of a scoring role — than Dorwart.
The Flyers signed Dorwart, who will turn 23 on Sept. 17, out of Michigan State University, late last season. The young center/left wing dressed in five NHL games with Philadelphia. Dorwart held his own for the most part in limited ice time for interim head coach Brad Shaw but did not jump out as a slam dunk NHL roster in similar fashion to how Noah Cates stood out late in the 2021-22 season after he concluded his college career.
New Flyers head coach Rick Tocchet and the Hockey Operations staff will take a fresh look at Dorwart in training camp. He’s eligible for the American Hockey League and will play for John Snowden’s Lehigh Valley Phantoms if he’s unable to secure an opening night NHL roster spot. This past spring, Flyers general manager Daniel Briere commented on Dorwart that the organization likes his size, motor, and responsible two-way approach. He’s not projected to score much at the pro level, but has a chance to develop into a reliable checker and perhaps an eventual PK regular.
