Quick Hits: Konecny, World Championships, Ersson, Phantoms

The Dallas Stars’ thrilling comeback win in Game 7 of their Western Conference Quarterfinal series against the Colorado Avalanche was a great outcome on two different fronts. First, it was outstanding from a sheer entertainment standpoint. Secondly, it was good for the Flyers’ from an NHL Draft asset standpoint. Importantly, the 2025 first-round pick the Flyers acquired from Colorado last year increased in value with the Avs (8th-place in the leaguewide regular season standings) losing in the first round of the playoffs.

Here are your Flyers Quick Hits for May 4, 2025:

Calder Cup Playoffs: Phantoms Host Hershey in Game 3

The Lehigh Valley Phantoms will host the defending Calder Cup champions Hershey Bears on Sunday in Game Three of their best-of-five playoff series. Game time is 5:05 p.m. EDT. The Atlantic Division Semifinal series is tied at one win apiece.

On Friday, the Phantoms skated to a 3-1 road win at Giant Center in Hershey. Two shorthanded goals by Zayde Wisdom in the third period sparked Lehigh Valley to victory. Hershey prevailed in Game 1 last Wednesday, 3-0, behind Hunter Shepard’s shutout goaltending.

U18s: Canada Captures Gold Medal

Team Canada has won back-to-back gold medals at the IIHF Under-18 World Championship. On Saturday in Frisco, TX, the Canadian squad defeated Sweden in a 7-0 rout. Brady Martin scored twice for Canada to take Best Player honors. Soo Greyhounds (OHL) center Martin is widely project as a mid first-round pick in the 2025 Draft. Meanwhile, goalie Jack Ivankovic stopped all 28 shots he faced.

Earlier in the bronze medal game, Team USA earned a 4-3 overtime victory against a determined Slovakian squad. Arizona State recruit Ben Kevan (Des Moines, USHL) notched the winning goal in sudden death. Kevan is generally forecast as a mid-second to early third round prospect for the 2025 Draft.

IIHF Worlds Prep: Ersson Earns Win vs. Finns

Flyers goaltender Samuel Ersson turned back 27 of 29 shots at the Betano Hockey Games (AKA Czech Hockey Games) tournament on Sunday. Team Sweden defeated traditional arch-rival Finland, 6-2. Oskar Steen and Marcus Sorensen tallied two goals apiece for Tre Kronor.

The Czech Hockey Games is the final tuneup prep tourney before the 2025 IIHF World Championships. Stockholm, Sweden, and Herning, Denmark. are this year’s host cities. Ersson will play for Sweden for the second straight year.

Meanwhile, Travis Konecny, Tyson Foerster and Travis Sanheim will represent Team Canada. Ersson represented Sweden at the 4 Nations Face-Off in February. Likewise, Konecny and Sanheim played at 4 Nations. This will be Foerster’s first national team experience at the men’s level.

TK on Flyers Daily

Friday’s episode of Flyers Daily featured back-to-back Bobby Clarke Trophy winner Travis Konecny. The player discussed his 2024-25 season with host Jason Myretetus. Konecny deconstructed the 2024-25 season for both the team and himself. The interview was recorded during Exit Day in Voorhees.

Great victory by Dallas last night. I think most of us may have been watching last night hoping for this outcome. The Aves pick definitely increases in value with this win.

Thing only brings more excitement to Flyers fans. I believe this could be the most fun and most important draft the Flyers have seen maybe ever. You’ve got the 3 first round picks, one that should be top 5. You’ve got 4 second round picks. I’m also gonna factor in Foerster, York, Cates and Pelletier as RFAs. Flyers with plenty of cap space. I think Cates is getting resigned and the Flyers should want Foerster signed long term. I think with York’s regression, the Flyers should use York as bait in this draft.

Rantanen was an absolute beast as that series went on. What a series that was. Even better that our pick could end up at 22. This draft really has some big potential for Danny.
