Friedman: Top Flyers prospect headed for NCAA

Elliotte Friedman tweeted early Monday morning that Flyers 2025 first-round pick Porter Martone will commit to play NCAA hockey for Michigan State this season. The report is not yet officially confirmed as of this writing. The report caught me by surprise a bit. Martone has said his goal is attend NHL training camp this September and try to make the Flyers’ opening night roster. Playing college hockey precludes it.

Michkov is no fan of dump-and-chase hockey

Philadelphia Flyers sophomore winger Matvei Michkov recorded an on-ice video for Russian media. He demonstrates some his skills and discusses some of his beliefs about the proper way to play. In particular, the 20-year-old winger notes that he wants to enter the attack zone with possession of the puck. He is no fan of dump-and-chase hockey, rimming the puck around the wall and pursuing it to dig it free in a 50-50 battle. Michkov said that even if you win back the puck, it’s tiring.

The first time he was to do it, according to Michkov, the player said he would. However, he proceeded to do what he wanted instead on his very next shift. Michkov has said before that he believes dumping in the puck is primarily useful at the tail end of a shift when it’s time to go off for a line change.

Flyers Daily: Mondays with Meltzer (July 21, 2025)

In the July 21st edition of Flyers Daily, Jason Myrtetus and I do the monthly “Ask Billy” segment of submitted audience questions. Additionally, we delve into the question of which center should play with Matvei Michkov next season. I ask Jason how he’d slot each of the four presumptive centers — newcomers Trevor Zegras and Christian Dvorak plus holdovers Sean Couturier and Noah Cates — if it were Jason’s call to make.We also look which Flyers players might benefit the most from playing under Rick Tocchet. We opened the show by talking Tocchet’s systems and systems in general. That’s a tie-in to the Tocchet systems series of blogs I’m doing this offseason at Hockey Hot Stove.

Checkmates Charity update

The Checkmates Charity tournament has been reformatted this year. Justin Mirigliani patterned with Chrirping Pucks (Frankie James) to organize and operate the tournament. The reformatting saved the tourney from cancellation.
