The Vancouver Canucks are open for business. They already traded their former captain, Quinn Hughes, to the Minnesota Wild, and more of their players are expected to be on the move from here.
Kiefer Sherwood is undoubtedly a Canucks player to keep an eye on. The 30-year-old winger has been the subject of trade speculation throughout this season due to his pending unrestricted free agent (UFA) status and the Canucks being at the bottom of the NHL standings. He is also a very appealing target for contenders, as he scores goals, plays a heavy game, and has an excellent contract.
In the most recent episode of TSN Insider Trading, Chris Johnston revealed that the New York Rangers made a trade offer for Sherwood, and it was certainly not a small one. According to Johnston, the Rangers offered the Canucks a young player “with pedigree” and a second-round pick to try to acquire Sherwood. However, that was not enough for the Rangers to land the gritty winger.
Johnston also noted that while the Rangers recently made a trade offer for Sherwood, they are no longer in the mix for the Canucks forward because they are heading toward being sellers due to their major struggles.
Many Teams Will Target Sherwood With Rangers Out Of The Sweepstakes
While the Rangers are no longer in the mix for Sherwood, there is no question that he will continue to generate interest from other clubs. He is exactly the kind of player that playoff teams love to add at the deadline, and it is no secret that several clubs have already been connected to him this season.
In 44 games so far this season with the Canucks, Sherwood has recorded 17 goals, 23 points, and 210 hits. With numbers like these, he would be a fantastic addition for any contender. However, based on Johnston’s report, it’s unlikely that Sherwood will become a Ranger.
