The New York Rangers announced changes to their Hockey Operations staff on Monday. While none of the moves were earth-shattering, they continued a pattern under GM Chris Drury of putting former Rangers in management roles.
Rangers hockey ops shuffle
- The Rangers promoted Ryan Martin to Associate General Manager/ He will continue in his role as General Manager of the Wolf Pack.
- New York promoted Jim Sullivan to Assistant General Manager.
- – The Rangers named Ryane Clowe an Assistant General Manager.
- Blake Wheeler is now a Hockey Operations Adviser.
Martin has been part of the organization for four years, joining prior to the 2021-22 season. He is a key confidant and adviser to Drury and his promotion evidences his stature in the organization, Sullivan is entering his 17th season with the Rangers organization in 2025-26, having worked in a variety of roles. The surprise is Clowe, who joined San Jose last year in a similar capacity and just resigned yesterday, ostensibly to re-join Drury in New York. Wheeler is stepping into a new role after finishing his playing career in 2023-24. This is a way for him to get his feet wet on the management side of the house.
Gaining collective views and consensus opinions are a good thing. Martin, having worked in Detroit for years, does bring a different perspective. Clowe, who worked for Sharks’ GM Mike Grier, a good friend of Drury, hopefully picked up some new ideas during his year out west. Wheeler finished his playing career in New York, spending all but the one year there with either Boston or Atlanta/Winnipeg, so he has seen different perspectives. No one way is the right way, but figuring a path forward that helps maximize the players’ talent is key.
Rookie Camp
Rookie Camp opens Wednesday. NHL training camp starts next week. It’s right into the fire, as the rookies face the Flyers on Friday for the first tournament action. Below are the tweets from the Rangers, which has the roster, and Mollie Walker containing the schedule and statistical information on the invitees.
Rookie Camp Notes
- Brennan Othmann, drafted in 2021, may still be a rookie based on playing 25 games total the past two seasons. The rookie qualification rule is: “To be considered a rookie, a player must not have played in more than 25 NHL games in any preceding seasons, nor in six or more NHL games in each of any two preceding seasons. Any player at least 26 years of age (by September 15th of that season) is not considered a rookie”.
- Gabe Perreault gets his first true chance to prove he deserves a roster spot. The odds are high but a good rookie camp and tourney will help his case.
- Adam Sykora has fallen behind some of his contemporaries. Can he take a step forward?
- Size – several players are 6-foot-3 and taller. While not the primary focus, size clearly has been a somewhat of a factor in draft.
- Scott Morrow – acquired for K’Andre Miller, Morrow is in the running for a spot on the blueline. Like Perreault, a good camp will help.
