Red Wings: Griffins are on FIRE!!

The Detroit Red Wings continue to make changes, however their AHL affiliate is almost perfect. The Grand Rapids Griffins are 10-0-0-1 to start the year, thereby setting a new club record. The hot start is a shock, albeit a very welcome shock.

The Griffins only loss came in a shootout, accordingly the team has points in every contest so far. The loss came in their ninth game, even so the club set a new record. Eight wins to start the season stands as the best ever start for this AHL club.

Several NHL veterans are in Grand Rapids

Part of the success can be attributed to NHL veterans, such as Erik Gustafssonand Austin Watson. Gustafsson has eight assists in eight games, hence clipping at a point per game. Similarly, Watson has five points (4G, 1A) in six games played.

AHL rules limit the veterans to six per game, consequently someone has to sit out. Grand Rapids is rotating healthy scratches to remain compliant at this point. That instability has done little to upset the roster, however it may become an issue at some point.

Detroit is always looking for possible upgrades, therefore teams needing depth may come calling. Gustafsson, in particular, may be an attractive option for teams going forward. Injuries are taking their toll league wide, and Gustafsson isn’t far removed form NHL action.

Amadeus Lombardi and Michael Brandsegg-Nygard

Amadeus Lombardi has 13 points in 11 games, however only two goals so far. Even so, at more than a point per game Lombardi’s production has been impressive. His scoring finally broke through against Toronto, scoring two goals in two games.

Similarly, Michael Brandsegg-Nygard is finally finding his game. After a tough start to the season, MBN has two goals and one assist in his past five games. His move to the AHL is paying off, as confidence continues to grow.

Detroit’s options for call ups are going to be important, in particular with such a tough schedule. The Olympic break has compressed the schedule, and there are very few nights off. Opportunities will continue to open up, and the players in Grand Rapids are ready to go.
