Red Wings Have Big Surprises On Roster

Red Wings prospects stun in preseason

The Red Wings have three shocking, albeit welcome, additions to their roster. The 23 man roster has been submitted, and heads are being turned. Emmitt FinnieMichael Brandsegg-Nygard and Axel Sandin-Pellikka have made the team.

All three players took advantage of strong camps, as well as a grueling pre season. The team made it clear that spots would be earned, and they clearly meant it. The end result saw two veteran defensemen enter, and clear waivers to make room for the kids.

Axel Sandin-Pellikka has been outstanding

In particular, Sandin-Pellikka has stood out during the preseason trials. It is difficult for young prospects to make the team, but even more so for defenseman. ASPs exponential growth saw Justin Holl and Erik Gustafsson both be exposed to waivers.

ASP has already shown excellent vision on ice, as well as elusive puck handling skills. The future is bright for the 2023 first round pick, even more so with this early opportunity. ASP could well see time on ice with Simon Edvinsson, another first round defenseman selected by Steve Yzerman.

Has the “Yzerplan” turned a corner?

The hallmark of Yzerman’s vision for the team has been to build through the NHL draft. 11 of the 23 players on this roster are Detroit draft picks, and eight of those have been under Steve Yzerman’s tenure. The team is getting younger, and the future is looking brighter.

Fans have grown impatient with the rebuild, but perhaps these developments will buy some good will for the team. Moritz Seider and Lucas Raymond are already clear leaders on the team. Marco Kasper has also become a key part of the rebuild. There is a long season ahead, but it looks like the youth will be key to this year’s success.

We can all take a collective sigh of relief that Yzerman had enough common sense to keep all three of these kids in the lineup. He would have gotten the lynch mob otherwise. Nygaard in particular was a lock after training camp and the preseason games. ASP and Finnie also were simply too good to ignore and send back to GR. It really wasn’t that hard of a decision. The talent speaks for itself. This is a big moment for the rebuild which is now turning the corner. There’s no substitute for young legs. To quote Bob Hartley (former NHL coach of the Colorado Avalanche)… “Old players get older, young players get better”. It will be weird seeing Holl and Gustaufson in GR though.

Next players coming up to Detroit: Wallin, Danielson, Mazur, Cossa and hopefully Tuistomo. That’s at least four legit NHL prospects that can make the jump and make this team better (especially Wallin and Cossa).

I can’t help but be excited for this team this season. Even if they don’t make the playoffs they are going to be exciting to watch. They should be improved at goaltending with Gibson. I feel their defense will be better this year simply by not having Gus and Holl there. Addition by subtraction. I am also really excited to see the youngsters in regular season action. I can’t wait for this season to start.

I still see the defense as lacking. ASP making the team is great, but he should be protected on the 3rd pairing for a few months. He still is learning the defensive game. It would be wonderful to be proven wrong!
Finnie and Branny will have to weather the rigors of a very long season. Hopefully they do. I would love to see them up for the full season! My hope is that Y bolsters this team with other additions throughout the season and takes advantage of the teams that will bail early for a chance at McKenna.

Nice to read you again !
The end of pre season was something to follow, just as exciting as a good season to come.
Rookies have been consistent (at least three of them, and Danielson) but what a surprise to see the roster.
I thought they would keep ASP in AHL for a while. Will he have enough minutes to get better ? Will Al J have enough minutes too ?
And I was not a big fan of MBN (still not my favorite) but I must say he has something special (a little Hull or Shanahan thing).
Let’s hope Finnie can last for a long season (where the games are more difficult than pre season, especially after february), he seems to slot in well and sure can skate (you have to, playing with Larks and Ray) !
A bit sorry for Lombardi and Mazur though, it will be interesting to have some news on them and Cossa in the AHL.
