EXCITING TRADE MARKET
The Free Agent market may be too rich for the Red Wings this summer. However, more teams continue to make players available for trade. The Vegas Golden Knights have added an intriguing name to the mix.
Detroit is one of three teams rumored to be discussing Nicolas Hague. The left shot defenseman could be a strong addition to the blue line. Standing 6’6”, the 26 year old is an RFA coming off of a 2.3 million dollar contract.
Red Wings can add a dependable roster piece
Hague offers a variety of strengths for Detroit. A young defenseman drafted just two years before Moritz Seider. A large physical presence that can stabilize the top pairing. This is a player that could be a part of the team for years to come.
With Simon Edvinsson entering into his second season, Hague adds even more value. Due to a weak blue line core, Edvinsson could be pushed to top line minutes. If Hague were added, this could allow Edvinsson to grow his game where it is best suited.
Detroit desperately needs stronger defending. The team also needs more offensive output. Both Seider and Edvinsson have shown glimpses of scoring prowess. They need the opportunity to develop that side of the game.
Red Wings need more blueline stability
The availability of Hague feels like a rare opportunity. Las Vegas has under 10 million in cap space. Only nine forwards are signed for next season. They are also without a first round pick for the next two seasons.
The perfect storm of cap space, picks and prospects sits in Detroit’s favor. Many are wondering if GM Steve Yzerman will part with a pick to add an NHL ready player. Hague could well be a name that fits the bill.
For Detroit to break the 9 year playoff drought, defense is badly needed. Nicolas Hague could be an ideal candidate at an ideal price. If Steve Yzerman can close this deal, the summer will be off to a promising start.
