One week ago, the Red Wings were riding high, however a lot can change in a week. Roster changes were made, unfortunately they weren’t enough to make an impact against Chicago. Detroit fell 5-1 against the Blackhawks, consequently the losing streak is at three.
Detroit scored just twice in three games, thereby giving opposing goalies a combined 98% save percentage on the 102 shots taken. Shots on net are gaining a low, indeed distrubingly low 2% conversion rate. Add to that the Red Wings legends in attendance and, indeed this weekend was a low point.
Marco Kasper’s demotion is troubling
Among the changes, perhaps the most eye opening was the reassignment of Marco Kasper. Kasper was moved from the 2C position to the wing, yet that didn’t move the needle. JT Compher was moved to the second line, thereby eliminating the chemistry that was already struggling.
Kasper, along with Kane and Debrincat, were the team’s best line at the end of the last season. Detroit has failed to recreate that stability this year. Patrick Kane’s injury derailed his ability to contribute, meanwhile Kasper is struggling to contribute. Debrincat has been a steady performer, even so that has not stabilized the top six.
By game’s end, the coaches moved DeBrincat up to Larkin’s wing, wiping out the second line altogether. Finnie is struggling too, hence his removal from Larkin’s wing felt inevitable. The Red Wings, again, can’t fill the top two lines and it’s a problem.
Is Yzerman shopping for centers?
The NHL rumor mill is in full swing, but no one knows whether Detroit will take advantage. Nazem Kadri has entered those rumors, with reports that Carolina failed to acquire his services due to trade protection. Ryan O’Reilly and Brayden Schenn may be available, however the price may be steep at this point.
Detroit’s rebuild is at a crossroads, accordingly any major moves will be difficult. Prospects are beginning to turn heads, however it may be premature to part with a top prospect for veteran help. First round picks have been big for the Red Wings, thus they may not be available for trade.
Nate Danielson made his debut, unfortunately the team performance made it hard to stand out. Danielson played 15:16 garnering four shots, although his faceoffs were not good at 20%. Detroit needs to snap this skid quickly, consequently more big moves could be on the way. This young team would find a fourth straight loss rough, if not demoralizing
