Red Wings see big changes during struggles

Coach McLellan looking for answers

Marco Kasper, in particular, has struggled greatly this season with three goals and no assists. Kasper was returned to the wing in practice, in hopes of reigniting the young forward. McLellan has been open about expectations, which is an important part of the Red Wings improvement.

Energy is a problem for the team right now

Young players are at the heart of Detroit’s resurgence, however there are struggles that come with the youth movement.  Intensity continues to ramp up, which combined with a demanding schedule can be tough for rookies to adapt to. Fortunately, McLellan is constantly communicating and willing to make adjustments on the fly.

Detroit has an advantage, which can be found on the AHL roster. Grand Rapids is off to a perfect 8-0 start, and the players are eager for an opportunity in the NHL. John Leonard, a free agent pickup, has nine goals in seven games for the Griffins. Likewise, Dominik Shine has impressed with six goals and three assists in seven contests.

Nate Danielson is healthy again, whereas the two way center has five points (1G, 4A) in four games played. Danielson is expected to compete for a roster spot, which may become a factor sooner rather than later. Danielson’s size and energy could make a big impact for Detroit, as long as he can stay healthy this season.

Detroit’s Centennial weekend celebration
