Red Wings give up three goal lead in loss

The Red Wings’ recent home stand has been a disaster, and the final loss was more than just concerning. Detroit held a three goal lead at one point, however Buffalo stormed back and won the game. Defensive collapses continue, consequently the young team is struggling.

Detroit had an incredible second period, scoring three goals and dominating the play. The team’s defensive issues then managed to undo that performance. Conversely, Buffalo found life and executed a strong comeback win. The Red wings’ team is young, and inexperience is causing a lot of problems.

The youth movement has its challenges

Young players are at the heart of the rebuild, still the team needs strong veterans. Prospects continue to excite, including a near perfect season for the Griffins club.   However, at the NHL level, the learning curve is unforgiving.

Coach Todd McLellan has some tough, albeit welcome insight after the game. McLellan focused on in game awareness, citing lapses that cost the team a win. The young core is still learning tough lessons, and the veterans aren’t filling in those gaps.

The Red Wings need a defensive upgrade

The blue line, in particular, suffers greatly from a lack of veteran depth. Simon Edvinsson is in just his second full NHL season, yet he’s counted on for heavy minutes every night. Veteran defensemen have largely disappointed in Yzerman’s tenure, and the problems continue to grow.

If Detroit wants to make the post season, a top four defensive upgrade is a must. That player is one most, if not every team is always looking for. The Red Wings would have to part with a significant piece, therefore the deal may be unattainable right now.  Without a significant improvement, Detroit may well miss the playoffs for a tenth consecutive season.

Concerning young D issues indeed, but is it the system or the players ? I’m not sure having a top 4 D (if it is ever possible now it is so expensive) will change the D system. NHL is punishing, a mistake = a goal, but if you can play following a good D system, with a lot of will, it should be enough. Look at the start of the season, it worked.
Maybe it is too demanding, and as the young ones are getting tired, they cannot follow it properly.
But I’m not sure a good D would bring better results. Unless they can bring a superstar like Lidstrom…

This was absolutely abysmal to watch. I was stunned….and, frankly, pissed. There’s no excuse for this kind of collapse… Eddy played THE worst game of his NHL time. Watching him allow Thompson destroy The Cat….he should be embarrassed. We need D help. Not sure if Stetcher fell to us, but he would’ve been a decent get. JBD needs to have more ice time because Hamonic has shown his age….He can play ok at times. But he’s just not there anymore.

Thankfully, we pulled it off vs NYR. And the ‘brawl’ after the game was awesome. But again, in this game, we played like we CAN. The game management and consistency need to be worked on because it’s going to blow our chances at the SCPO. Good game. Nice come-back.

What is there to say? Slow in the 1st (highest goal differential in the NHL in the 1st period), wild 2d – at least the PP clicked, collapse in the 3d.

We can’t continually come back from a deficit. We can’t hold a lead. CBJ swarmed the net for the tying goal, no one took a body and we looked like the Keystone Cops. Cost us the game and a point we need desperately.

Mo’s looking really good, and frankly needs to be in the Norris conversation. Chiarot’s playing his best hockey ever. But if we have to reply on Eddy and Chiarot (Mo’s a given perfirmer), we’re in really gad shape defensively. You can see there’s some form of team D scheme, but we don’t have the talent to execute it routinely.

If we want to make the SCPO, or even retain some levwl of respectability, we need to pull the trigger on a major move. Hughes should be the target. But there’s other names out there. Shake this team up.

    This is getting embarrassing.
