According to a report from TSN’s Darren Dreger, the Philadelphia Flyers will be re-signing veteran winger Carl Grundstrom to a one year, $1 million contract when free agency opens.

Grundstrom was set to enter unrestricted free agency when the market opens on Wednesday. The Swedish wing turned out to be a solid depth addition to the Flyers forward group, as he played all three forward positions.

Following his acquisition from the San Jose Sharks in the Ryan Ellis contract trade back in October, he started the season with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms.

After his recall, the 28 year old wing had a strong December when he scored seven goals in a 11 game period. Playing 47 games, he finished with nine goals, 13 points, and a plus-seven rating. He also played in three playoff games, adding an assist.

Accordingly, Grundstrom’s pace of play is likely what attracted the Flyers to bring him back onboard. The trade of Garnet Hathaway also opened the door to his return as the Flyers likely want a veteran option in event younger forwards aren’t ready.

Expect he’ll be a part of camp battles for a roster spot.

What of Glendening And Other Possible Moves?

It’s somewhat of a minor surprise that the Flyers are brining Grundstrom back ahead of reports that they are interested in re-signing Luke Glendening.

Philadelphia picked Glendening off waivers after the trade deadline last season. He proved to be a vital, versatile piece to their playoff push with his faceoffs and forechecking work.

However, it begs the question as to how many veterans are the Flyers looking to return after Grundstrom. And from a larger offseason standpoint, might this be the beginning of other roster moves for some of their young forwards in a larger trade, whether that’s for a better center or defenseman option.

The clock is ticking towards tomorrow’s market opening.
