The New York Rangers’ organization suffered a massive blow Thursday with the passing of Ron Duguay from colon cancer at 69 years old. Known for his flowing hair and speed, Duguay, drafted 13th overall in 1977, played six years on Broadway, including helping the team to the 1979 Stanley Cup Finals. Post-career, Duguay was an analyst on MSG Network from 2007-18 and also part of the NY Post Rangers’ podcast, Up in the Blue Seats.
Making stops in New York, Detroit, Pittsburgh and Los Angeles, Duguay racked up 864 games in the NHL. His final season in the league came with the Kings in 1988-89, which wrapped up his NHL career at 274 goals and 346 assists for 620 points. But he is best known for his time with the Rangers.
Duguay took advantage of his good looks and the availability of the NY nightlife to be a fixture at Studio 54. While that was the case, on the ice, Duguay was more than willing to be physical when needed, belying his appearance. Over 499 games with the Rangers, Duguay finished with 164 goals and 176 assists for 340 points.
I am ecstatic that the team put out the above tweet. Duguay was in essence blackballed by the organization for his political beliefs, which partially led to his dismissal from his analyst role at MSG Network and also the Post podcast. The news of his passing was posted on X by Duguay’s girlfriend, Sarah Palin.
The Rangers next play at home on Monday against the Kings. New York will hopefully have a moment of silence and either his jersey number on a patch or a black arm band on their jerseys as a tribute. RIP Doogs, gone way too soon.
