The Buffalo Sabres ended their three-game road skid with a 4-3 overtime victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday night at Rogers Place.
The much-needed win came four games into the Sabres current six-game road trip. After dropping the first three contests of the trip in Philadelphia, Winnipeg and Calgary, Buffalo rebounded on Tuesday to grab the two points.
After relinquishing a 3-0 lead in the third period, including the tying goal by Connor McDavid with just one second left in regulation, the Sabres earned the hard-fought victory on the overtime tally by winger Alex Tuch.
“It just shows as a group the determination to end something like this and get back in the winning column,” said winger Josh Doan, who had two goals in the game. “It’s one of those games where they got a really good team, and you gotta know that they’re coming late in the game. When a game gets going like that, you just gotta kind of hunker down there. They did a good job capitalizing on chances, but to get a win in overtime on a play from Clouder (former Oiler Ryan McLeod ) to Tuchy( Alex Tuch) is huge for us. “.
Forward Tage Thompson added a goal and two assists to help Buffalo secure the win. Even with the dramatic victory, the Sabres still find themselves at the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings, and have yet to record a road win in regulation so far this season. Despite impressive victories at points this season, an inability to win more than two consecutive games has dogged the club through thirty games played.
The Sabres still have an opportunity to finish this road stretch with a 500 record, with remaining games with Vancouver and Seattle still ahead. However, the gap between Buffalo and the final wildcard playoff spot in the East now sits at seven points. With hopes of a postseason berth fading quickly, the Sabres will need a significant streak of victories to keep the season alive.
