Senators Roster Is Coming Together

With season-opening 23-man NHL rosters due at 5 p.m. Monday, Sunday was moving day for the Ottawa Senators. Since the team doesn’t play their first regular season game until October 3 in Toronto, there may still be tweaks later this week. But for the time being, Ottawa’s gameday roster is much closer to clarity.

After a multitude of moves Sunday, the club’s camp roster now stands at 29 players. Four players were returned to their respective junior teams: Forwards Louis-Félix Bourque (Drummondville, QMJHL), Jaxon Cover (London, OHL), Adam Nemec (Sudbury, OHL), Blake Vanek (Calgary, WHL).

Nemec left Saturday’s preseason game favouring his shoulder at the Bell Centre after being slammed into the boards by Canadiens Florian Xhejac. His playing status is unknown.

Five players were released from PTO’s: Goalie Vadim Zherenko, defenseman Scott Harrington, Cal Uens, Forwards Landon Hookey, Luke Mistelbacher. Hookey is currently recovering from a foot fracture, and Mistelbacher is likely ticketed to the East Coast League Allen Americans.

Ten players have been loaned to Belleville:

Goalies Jackson Parsons, Kevin Reidler, defensemen Matthew Andonovski, Gabriel Elliason, Tomas Hamara, Djibril Toure, forwards Eskild Bakke Olsen, Lucas Ellinas, Kasper Haltunnen, Oskar Pettersson.

Eight players have been placed on waivers for the purposes of being loaned to Belleville:

Defensemen Samuel Bolduc, Christian Kyrou, forwards Sammy Blais, Tyler Boucher, Xavier Bourgault, Philippe Daoust, Ryan Suzuki, Philip Tomasino.

Of note, Blais and Tomasino had excellent camps on all accounts, according to Senators head coach Travis Green.

Of the Senators’ “29,” five are currently injured and likely heading to injured reserve.

Forwards Warren Foegele, Kurtis MacDermid, and D-man Artem Zub. Blake Montgomery and Jorian Donovan, who would’ve been loaned to Belleville, are also injured.

Doing the math, this brings down the Senators roster to 24 players, meaning one more player will need to be Belleville-bound by Monday at 5 p.m.

It’s become obviously clear, defenseman Cam Crotty will be in Ottawa at least through Monday. A steady defender, Crotty requires waivers and wasn’t among the eight Sunday.

One or both of promising waiver-exempt rookies Carter Yakemchuk and Hoyt Stanley can be loaned to the “BSens,” and is the likely scenario at this point. Brockville native Ben Hutton remains in Ottawa’s camp on his PTO.
