Senators Stun Jets Late, Win In OT

Brady Tkachuk scored 2:11 into overtime giving the Ottawa Senators a 3-2 win over the Jets in Winnipeg. Senators defenseman Jake Sanderson tied the game at two with 1:54 remaining in regulation after his point shot redirected off Jets Mark Scheifele’s stick past goalie Connor Hellebuyck.

Nick Cousins opened the scoring 10:42 into the second period with a squeaker between the arm and blocker of Hellebuyck.

Jets Neal Pionk’s point shot glanced off Senators Drake Batherson less than five minutes later to make it 1-1. Logan Stanley propelled Winnipeg to a 2-1 lead heading into the third period after his blast beat Linus Ullmark late in the second frame. Stanley’s marker was one the Senators netminder likely wanted back just inside his blocker.

Just like they drew it up

The Senators captain fired a pass from Tim Stützle glove side past Hellebuyck for his 12th overtime career game-winner. The play started behind the Senators as Sanderson sent a pass out to the blue line to Stützle who carried the puck into the Jets zone, feeding Tkachuk. But it was Stützle who made a crucial hit on Jets Cole Perfetti into the boards which created separation for Sanderson to send the 23-year-old on a 2-on-1 with Tkachuk.

Senators Stützle remains hot

Tim Stützle registered a game high six shots on goal and was engaged all evening. Factoring in all three Senators goals, Stützle extended his point streak to four games, compiling four goals, five assists over this period, and is now back over a point-per-game pace on the season (33 points, 15 goals, 18 assists in 32 games).

MacDermid equals Mac-Win

Acquired from the New Jersey Devils in exchange for Zack MacEwen prior to the start of the 2025-26 campaign, MacDermid has dressed in only 12 of the Senators 32 games, averaging a miniscule 4:18 time-on-ice. But on this night, the rugged forward pocketed his first point in his past 50 NHL games, and his first point as an Ottawa Senators with a primary helper on Cousins’ marker. Playing in his 300th career regular season game, having not scored in 90 games MacDermid hit the post in the opening period. Inexplicably, the Senators possess a record of 8-2-2 with MacDermid in the lineup, 7-11-2 without.

Senators Sanderson shines

Jake Sanderson once again took control in the absence of injured d-man Thomas Chabot. Jake “the snake” played 29:14, while notching the game-tying goal and and a huge assist on Tkachuk’s GWG. On pace for a career high 66 points, Sanderson is averaging a whooping 27:19 with Chabot out of of the Senators lineup, second only to newly-acquired Minnesota Wild defenseman Quinn Hughes 27:47 over the past 11 games.

Ullmark responds

Linus Ullmark made 23 saves, many of the clutch variety. While the Jets go-ahead goal by Logan Stanley with 1:24 remaining in the second was one the goaltender would’ve liked back, as are all goals ideally, Ullmark made several key third period stops to get his team to overtime. Then the Senators goalie stopped Jets Kyle Connor early in OT, keeping his club alive to gain a much-needed second point.

The Senators head home victorious in two of three games on the road. They next face the Pittsburgh Penguins Thursday at the Canadian Tire Centre. There’s a chance the Senators ‘D’ may be bolstered with the possible return of Thomas Chabot who is currently skating in Ottawa.
