Stützle Shines In Senators Win Over Bruins

Tim Stützle led the charge with two goals and one assist en route to a 4-1 Ottawa Senators win over the Boston Bruins. The victory marks the first time the Senators have won their season-opening two road games since 2015-16 (Buffalo, Toronto).

Senators Game Summary

Stützle opened the scoring 7:39 in, netting a shorthanded marker. A reversal from Saturday, it was Michael Amadio who set up Stützle on a 2-on-1.

Less than two minutes later, Stützle intercepted a pass inside the Senators’ blue line while once again on the penalty kill. Skated the length of the ice, fanning on a shot, but had the wherewithal to take another swat at the puck, beating Bruins goalie Jeremy Swayman.

Just 1:06 into the middle frame, Stützle forced a turnover of Bruins rookie James Hagens, sending Drake Batherson in on a breakaway who didn’t miss.

Amadio tallied his second in as many games, finishing a heady backhand pass from Shane Pinto, giving the Senators a 4-0 lead.

Hagens got Boston on the board after Senators goaltender Samuel Ersson misplayed the puck in the corner. Ersson slid back into the net, but was unable to corral it.

Ersson started the third period after Linus Ullmark sustained an apparent injury 15:36 into the second. Ullmark appeared to be injured during a collision with Thomas Chabot, who had hauled down Bruins J.J. Peterka, but finished the period.

Possibly some good news: Ullmark remained on the bench for the final period, meaning Bradley Mitchell, the team’s EBUG, wasn’t needed.

Stützle doing it all

Last season, Tim Stützle pledged to take his game up a notch. He did just that, becoming a more complete player. The 24-year-old took on a fresh role as a permanent fixture on Ottawa’s penalty kill, spending extra time working on draws. His 53% faceoff percentage was a career best.

Saturday in Toronto, Stützle intercepted a key pass and blocked a shot on an important Senators PK in the final five minutes of regulation.

On this night, the center notched a shorthanded marker, again intercepted a pass while on the PK, scoring three seconds after the Bruins minor expired. He also set up Batherson for the Senators third goal, making a solid defensive play forcing a turnover.

Minus Brady Tkachuk, Stützle is also taking more of a leadership role.

On his club’s start to the season, Stützle said, “We’re really confident, and if we keep playing the same way, like we ended last year, I think we have a good chance to win every night, and we just got to keep doing it over and over, play as a whole team. So it’s been a lot of fun so far, all throughout camp. Worked really hard together, and yeah, just carried over into the games.”

Give that man a contract

A pending unrestricted free agent at season’s conclusion, Michael Amadio is the player every team needs. The 30-year-old’s hockey IQ is off the chart; not known as a scorer, but has ability to contribute offensively (15 goals, 20 assists in 2025-26), but most of all plays a complete game in a shutdown role whether it’s on a checking line or the Senators PK.

Witness Monday evening teaming up on Stützle’s shortie, then recording a goal himself at even strength.

Concern for Ullmark

Ottawa’s goaltending may have taken a hit when Thomas Chabot collided with Linus Ullmark in the crease. Ullmark stayed upright, but remained on his knees for a minute or so. He played the final 4:24 of the second period and was on the Senators bench during the third.

Hopefully, this was a good sign for the team and Ullmark himself. Now in his third season with Ottawa, Ullmark has stopped of 37 of 39 shots faced over his two starts, a .948 Save Percentage.

Head coach Travis Green explained his removal of Ullmark, “He kind of tweaked something a little bit. So precautionary, we just felt best if we bring him out. Get evaluated again from the collision.”

It was likely Ersson was going to be Ottawa’s starter Tuesday in Detroit in a second game of a back-to-back regardless of the situation.

There’s a chance newly-acquired goalie Jonas Johansson may be recalled from Belleville to back up Ersson. But it’s hoped Ullmark is ready to go Thursday for the Senators’ home opener.
