Tristan Jarry Injured In Win Over Bruins

Tristan Jarry exited the game during the second period of Thursday night’s game against the Boston Bruins. The Edmonton Oilers goaltender appears to be suffering from a lower-body injury.

Jarry appeared to have gotten hurt while attempting to make a save while sliding to his right. Oilers backup goaltender, Calvin Pickard, had to enter the game in relief. The Oilers were leading 2-1 when Jarry exited the game. He stopped 12 of the 13 shots he faced in over 36 minutes of action. Pickard stood tall in relief, and the Oilers won 3-1.

The 30-year-old Jarry was acquired by the Oilers last week in a deal that sent Stuart Skinner and Brett Kulak to the Pittsburgh Penguins. It was a significant move as it was the first real change the Oilers have made with their goaltending since the departure of Mike Smith.

Jarry was Playing Well

In his debut with the Oilers, Jarry was solid against the Toronto Maple Leafs last Saturday. The native of Surrey, B.C., made 28 saves in a 6-3 victory. A few nights later, against his former team, Jarry made 30 saves in a 6-4 win over the Penguins.

The injury is serious enough that Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman indicated on the latest 32 Thoughts podcast that the Oilers could circle back on trade interest for Buffalo’s Alex Lyon.

Jarry was acquired to bolster their chances of being a championship contender. In his first 16 appearances this season, 14 with the Penguins, Jarry has a record of 11-3-1 with a 2.77 GAA, a .905 SV%, and one shutout. He’s been the reason his team has earned points in five of his previous six starts.

Jarry is in the third year of his five-year contract that he signed with the Penguins in July 2023. His deal has a cap hit of $5.375 million until the completion of the 2027-28 season. In 309 career regular-season NHL games, Jarry has a record of 163-100-32, a 2.75 GAA, a .909 SV%, and 22 shutouts. He also has a record of 2-6 in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, posting a 3.00 GAA and a .891 SV%.
