Buffalo Sabres winger Alex Tuch has one season remaining on his existing seven-year contract. His current deal is a bargain for Buffalo at a $4.75 million cap hit. Moreover, the 29 year old Syracuse native is vital to the Sabres’ future.
The Sabres have missed the postseason for 14 consecutive seasons. Consequently, contract extension discussions can be a difficult sell the longer they drag into the season. Tuch grew up a Sabres fan. He has been a top performer for the club since his arrival in 2021. Tuch was a key piece of the Jack Eichel trade with the Vegas Golden Knights.
Sabres racing the clock
With a schedule front loaded with home games, the Sabres desperately need a fast start. Meanwhile, they face a push-pull conundrum with Tuch.
On one hand, a long-term agreement would carry risk for the Sabres down the line. An eight year max-term contract may not age well in the final years of the deal.
Conversely, Buffalo must focus on the now. Meanwhile. the organization cannot afford the distraction of having one of its best players remain on an expiring contract.
Tuch is coming off a 67-point season(36 goals, 31 assists). Additionally, he was a dependable penalty killer. Seven of his goals last season came shorthanded.
What does Tuch want for himself?
Does Tuch want to remain in Buffalo to help lead a much-needed turnaround? Or is he looking to pursue a Stanley Cup? Unfortunately, seeking the latter goal means going elsewhere. The longer the situation remains unresolved, the more concern for what the future holds will continue to build.
Tuch is a fan favorite. Unfortunately, should his future remain uncertain come October, the fan base would be justifiably fearful that yet another key player could be heading for an exit.
The Sabres must pull out all the stops to keep Tuch in the fold. Time is of the essence.

Tuch is the heart and soul of the Sabres. He is what Joe Pavelski was to the San Jose Sharks who foolishly let him go in favor Erik Karlsson and proceeded to descend to the basement of the NHL, where they amazingly remain below the Sabres to this day. We cannot let the lifeblood of the team, Alex Tuch, leave! He’s been a Sabres fan all his life!
