Yzerman Makes a Move for Gibson
After acquiring Carter Bear in the first round, Steve Yzerman made a move at the NHL draft. A deal was made that sent Petr Mrazek and two picks to Anaheim for goalie John Gibson. This was easily the biggest move of the day.
The picks sent to Anaheim were a second in 2027 and a fourth in 2026. John Gibson had some trade protection but seemed comfortable with the move. This is a big relief for Red Wings fans after losing on an attempted trade last year for Jacob Trouba.
The stability that Gibson can provide could do wonders for an anemic penalty kill. This deal is a step in the right direction for Steve Yzerman. There are still two glaring deficiencies that the General Manager needs to address in the coming days.
Two Areas Detroit needs to Address
The draft itself is quickly making way for July first, the start of unrestricted free agency. Detroit needs NHL ready players even more urgently than a replenished prospect pool. There are two main additions that need to be made.
Yzerman needs to add a top four defenseman. While there are several players in the AHL that could make the team, they will likely be on a third pairing. The high minutes need experienced defenders. Nicolas Hague and K’andre Miller should be on Detroit’s watch list.
The second major addition has to be a top six forward. Specifically, the left wing on Dylan Larkin’s line needs stability. Nicolaj Ehlers would be an ideal fit, but will be highly sought after. Assuming that Patrick Kane will return, the line with Marco Kasper and Alex Debrincat should be in tact to start the year.
Mixed Draft Reviews
Draft rounds two through seven tend to bring players who need development. Detroit has not seen any player from the past two drafts in the NHL. Only one from 2022, Marco Kasper, has seen NHL minutes. It is likely that all of the newest draftees will head to their junior pro or collegiate teams.
Until fans can watch the selections play, it is almost impossible to gauge this weekend’s success. Carter Bear is being roundly described as a high character and hard working player. The players will participate soon in a rookie development camp. The coaches will give their input on what each player brings to the table.
The move to acquire John Gibson seems to be the biggest part of day two. If Gibson can bring stability and strength to the net, the team has a chance to move forward. The days ahead may decide the fate of the 2025-2026 Red Wings team.
