The Toronto Maple Leafs normally open the season against the Montreal Canadiens, and although the 2025-26 regular season schedule is not slated to be released until Wednesday, a few easter eggs began to appear on Monday. The NHL revealed that the season will begin with a tripleheader on Tuesday, October 7, with the Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers hosting the Chicago Blackhawks, followed by the NY Rangers hosting Pittsburgh, and the LA Kings hosting Colorado.
The Leafs regular season is slated to open the following day, according to Karine Hains of the Hockey News at Scotiabank Arena, as Toronto will host the Habs. The season opener one year ago was a 1-0 shutout loss at Centre Bell, as Samuel Montembeault made 47 saves.
Newest Leaf defenseman Henry Thrun spoke to the media on Monday after being acquired from the San Jose Sharks for Ryan Reaves last week.
The 24-year-old Scarborough, MA native was excited for the opportunity to be moved to Toronto, but admitted that he grew up a fan of the archrival Boston Bruins.
“I grew up in the Boston area, so I knew the rivalry with Toronto, and the history they’ve seen in the playoffs,” Thrun said. “(The deal) was a total surprise. I was watching “Top Gun” and got a call from (San Jose GM) Mike Grier, and he broke the news to me. It was definitely surprising, but when he told me where i was traded, it was a nice way for that phone call kind of wrap up, just knowing I was going to a city like Toronto, just knowing the history and the success that the team has had over the past couple of years.”
