The Calgary Flames missed out on a playoff spot this season by virtue of a points tiebreaker with the St. Louis Blues. The Flames finished the season with a 10-2-3 record over their final 15 games. Ultimately, Ryan Huska’s club fell one point short of overtaking the Blues for the final postseason spot in the Western Conference.
The Flames nevertheless exited the season with a feeling the club can improve on its 2024-25 performance next year. The play of 22-year-old Matt Coronato is one of the main reasons for optimism.
Coronato enjoyed a breakout season, posting 24 goals and 47 points. He showed good hustle and a deft finishing touch, getting better and better as the season moved along. Coronato’s all-around game evolved. He also showed an ability this season to click with different linemates. Huska put Coronato on a line with Jonathan Huberdeau and Morgan Frost when Mikael Backlund missed six March games. Coronato didn’t miss a beat. He rattled off several strong games and showed a knack for coming up big in crunch time.
On Saturday, the Flames rewarded Coronato with a seven-year contract extension. Worth $45.5 million overall, the deal carries an average annual value (AAV) of $6.5 million per season. The deal preempts restricted free agent status for the American winger this summer.
