The New York Rangers prospects split their two-game Rookie Series against the Flyers. On Friday, the Rangers were unable to hold 2-0 or 3-2 leads, falling 4-3 to Philly. The next night, New York put together a solid 60 minutes, winning 5-2 to finish 1-0-1 in the tourney.
Game Two Highlights
Game One Highlights:
Coming into the two games, what I most wanted to see was how Brennan Othmann and Scott Morrow would look. Each player needed a strong two games heading into training camp to show they could potentially contend for a roster spot. In addition, Noah Laba, who was skating between Othmann and Gabe Perrwault, could continue his ascent with a strong performance.
Key player statistics:
Brennan Othmann: 1G, 3A
Scott Morrow: 1G, 3A
Noah Laba: 1G, 1A
Jarin Chmelař: 1G, 1A
Dylan Roobroeck: 1G, 1A
Gabriel Perreault: 1G (ENG), 1A
Jackson Dorrington: 1G
Raoul Boilard: 1G
Evan Passmore: 1A
Artyom Gonchar: 1A
Bryce McConnell-Barker: 1A
As seen from the numbers above, the three players all represented themselves well. Othmann, as he should have based on his experience, certainly had a solid tournament, tallying three assists Saturday. Morrow, after a so-so game one defensively, was far better in game two, notching the first goal of the game on the power-play plus a helper. Laba was strong in both contests, notching his goal following a beautiful move and pass by Othmann.
Callem Tung, who signed with the Rangers late last season after leading Connecticut to the NCAA Tournament for the first time, made 21 saves to notch the win. He likely will start the season in the ECHL, but could end up as Dylan Garand/s back up at Hartford of the AHL. Hugo Olias, who is ticketed for the ECHL, started the first game against the Flyers.
Regular camp opens this week. Othmann, Laba, Gabe Perreault, who scored the empty net marker to seal the win, and Morrow should be part of the main camp. We should know for sure in the next few days.
