The Toronto Maple Leafs got some unexpected good news on the injury front at the morning skate at Scotiabank Arena on Saturday, where the club is prepping for Connor McDavid’s lone visit to Toronto this season. Defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson, who suffered a lower body injury in the second period of a 3-2 overtime loss to the San Jose Sharks on Thursday, was a full participant and will be in the lineup for the Leafs fourth game of their five-game homestand.
Based on how much difficulty Ekman-Larsson had getting off the ice, observers may have been resigned to the veteran being out weeks, but his return averts further exacerbating the crisis on the Leafs blueline created by injuries to Brandon Carlo and Chris Tanev.
“It happened so quick, and I know the guy fell, and obviously he didn’t mean to do that, and I was lucky to get out of it pretty quick,” Ekman-Larsson said. “It was crazy how much it can change in a day or day and a half, so I’m lucky.”
On the negative side, the club did not have wingers William Nylander and Dakota Joshua at the morning skate due to illness and head coach Craig Berube said that both are game-time decisions. With both not participating, Bobby McMann resumed his position on the right side with Nicolas Roy, with Joshua’s spot being taken by Matias Maccelli, who has not played since November 28.
Dennis Hildeby will make his fourth straight start for Toronto, and will face off against Oilers newcomer Tristan Jarry, who was obtained from Pittsburgh on Friday in exchange for Stuart Skinner, Brett Kulak and a second round pick. Edmonton has been treading water for most of the season, and are in a Western Conference wild card spot at 14-11-6.
On the goalie injury page, it was once again a good news – bad news scenario. Joseph Woll took part in drills on Saturday and appears to be trending towards being available sometime next week, but the news regarding Anthony Stolarz continues to be shrouded in mystery. Berube indicated on Friday that the 31-year-old is not going to be on the ice anytime soon, but if Hildeby maintains his level of play and Woll resumes where he left off before his injury last week, the Leafs look to be in good shape between the pipes.
