Schmidt Is Mr. Reliable For Mammoth

For Nate Schmidt, a lot has happened in under two years. It was a year and a half ago that the Winnipeg Jets decided it was in their best interest to buy out Schmidt’s contract. This allowed the left-shooting defenseman to become a free agent. He then signed a one-year contract for $800,000 with the Florida Panthers.

Fast forward to the end of last season, and he is a Stanley Cup champion. Very shortly after that, he signed a three-year deal worth $3.5 million a season. Meanwhile, the Jets are still paying him $1.6 million to not be on their team.

Schmidt is playing some of his best hockey and has established himself as one-half of the Utah Mammoth’s most reliable defense pairing. His steadiness was highlighted on Saturday, January 17th, when he registered four points, including the game-winning goal. His performance helped the Mammoth defeat the Seattle Kraken 6-3. However, when he doesn’t produce offensively, he provides energy to keep the team going.

Schmidt is Enjoying His Time in Utah

Schmidt often receives a lot of the credit for the way he plays, but he will tell you that his teammates are part of his success. Most notably, his defense partner, John Marino. When you watch them play, you would think they’ve been partners for years. However, they didn’t even know each other before this season.

The two defense partners are yin and yang. Marino is the soft-spoken one, and Schmidt will keep talking until your ears fall off. On the ice, their personalities complement each other. Off the ice, Schmidt and his wife, Allie, love being in Utah. The two have experienced firsthand the reputation Utah has as a good family state.

He does wish he could participate in some of the local activities that every NHL player’s contract prohibits (they aren’t allowed to do such things as ski, snowboard, snowmobile, ride horses, etc.), but he does enjoy the mild winter. It has allowed them to spend more time outside. At the end of the day, Schmidt appreciates that his kids can enjoy watching him play in the NHL.
