New Canadiens Connection: Taking Stock

With the Winter Olympic break officially underway, this feels like a natural pause point to take stock of where the Montreal Canadiens are — and maybe more importantly, where they’re headed next? There are no NHL games to react to right now, which gives us a rare chance to step back and look at the bigger picture for the Habs.

Between now and the March 6th trade deadline, there are some key moments coming up that will shape the rest of this season — the end of the trade freeze, practices resuming, games restarting, and the decisions Jeff Gorton and Kent Hughes will have to make along the way.

This Week’s Show

On this week’s episode of the Canadiens Connection podcast, we’re looking at the Habs through 57 games, identifying what this team actually needs at each position, and asking the hard questions: what should be addressed at the NHL trade deadline — and what should be left alone?

We also discussed these important topics on this week’s episode of the podcast:

  • Canadiens waive a forward and assign him to the Laval Rocket.
  • A new coach was added to the organization’s staff.
  • Montreal will be well-represented at the 2026 Winter Olympics.

Speaking to Sportsnet this week, Canadiens President of Hockey Operations said, “We’d like to be aggressive, and we will be, if need be.”
