The Toronto Maple Leafs, according to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, appear to be waiting on a decision from former Leaf and Hall-of-Famer Mats Sundin as to how big a role he is interested in playing in the new management structure of the club. Friedman indicated on Monday’s 32 Thoughts podcast that there has been some suspicion that Sundin’s involvement in the club’s operations could be bigger than many have expected, and that some decision from him may be due at some point this week.
The Leafs reportedly have narrowed their management search down to Dallas Stars Assistant GM Scott White and former Arizona GM John Chayka, but there is still no clarity on whether former Vancouver GM Mike Gillis is still in the mix for some position, whether it be GM or President of Hockey Operations.
Sportsnet’s Nick Kypreos said that he believed that the Leafs were going to choose Chayka, but Friedman was not as definitive prior to the weekend, saying that the organization was leaning in Chayka’s direction, but that the process is far from done and could last until later this week.
The Toronto Marlies took advantage of home ice in Game 3 of their first-round Calder Cup Playoff series against the Rochester Americans, winning 4-2 at Coca-Cola Coliseum to advance to face the North Division-winning Laval Rockets.
Marlies captain Logan Shaw scored twice, Ryan Tverberg and William Villeneuve scored for Toronto, and Dennis Hildeby made 29 saves in his first game of the playoffs. The club will open its second-round best-of-five series in Laval on Wednesday and Friday, before returning to Toronto for Game 3 on Sunday, Game 4(if necessary) on Tuesday, May 5, and a deciding Game 5 back in Laval on Friday, May 8.
