One of the things that’s interesting about this time of year is: despite still having some of those disappointed and frustrated feelings from a week ago, how quickly teams and fans can shift their focus to the future. What comes next?
Over the past week, we’ve heard from management of the Montreal Canadiens – Jeff Gorton and Kent Hughes – and a number of players as the organization puts a bow on what was, by most measures, a pretty successful season. But if you listen closely, these press conferences aren’t really about looking backward. They’re about laying the groundwork for what’s ahead.
There were comments about roster construction, player development, contract situations, and where this team still needs to improve. There were also a few interesting nuggets about trades that didn’t happen, decisions that were made behind the scenes, and clues about how management views this roster heading into what could be a very important offseason.
