Senators Father’s Day Trade Shocker

Happy Father’s Day to the Tkachuk family! With dad, Keith possibly being on the brink of receiving a Hockey Hall of Fame nod Monday, the Ottawa Senators traded Brady Tkachuk to the Florida Panthers. In return, the Sens received the 9th and 25th overall picks in the upcoming NHL Draft. Additionally, the Panthers gave up a 2029 conditional first (top-10 protected) and 2030 second-round pick.

The Senators captain for the past five seasons joins his brother, Matthew in Florida.

There’s been plenty of noise around the league, Tkachuk would eventually want out of Ottawa. On each occasion, either the club made a denial or Tkachuk himself pledged his allegiance to the city of Ottawa and its fans.

Due to the birth of his son, Ryder, Tkachuk met Senators media several days after the team was swept by the Carolina Hurrcanes. At the time, the 26-year-old discussed continual trade rumors, “But I feel like I’ve answered this hundreds of times that none of that, I feel like I’ve never shown, I’ve never said, none of those things ever came out of my mouth, but honestly, it’s just getting frustrating. It’s become a distraction, and I have been fully committed to this team, to the City. It’s just becoming a distraction.”

That being said, per Fourth Period’s David Pagnotta on the Coming in Hot podcast noted, “This has been in the works for a couple of months.” Others such as Sportsnet’s Elliotte Freidman and The Athletic’s Pierre LeBrun noted Tkachuk made a request to be dealt a few weeks ago with Brady submitting a four-team list of Carolina, Florida, Minnesota, Vegas.

Senators general manager Steve Staios in Sunday evening’s media release said, “This was not a decision we took lightly, but ultimately we did what we felt best for the long-term future of our hockey club. We now possess cap space and draft capital and will be actively working to improve our roster.”

Postmedia’s Bruce Garrioch in an X post stated the Senators GM met with Tkachuk in New Jersey.

What’s next for the Senators?

Several options are on the table.

With three current first-round selections, (9, 25, 32), their 2028 first-rounder and now a pair of 2029’s, the club is in a position to add in more than one area, and now possess the collateral. Though pick no. 32 cannot be dealt. This was the selection re-instated by the NHL after the team was previously punished in the Evgenni Dadonov trade debacle.

If Staios is to acquire a high-end forward, the GM could dangle the 9th or 25th overall selections, in addition to other multiple picks. Centre Robert Thomas was rumored to be on the trade block, but the Blues reportedly reigned him back.

Pagnotta made the suggestion on X of a possible offer sheet or the Senators having a discussion with Stars GM Jim Nill regarding all star forward Jason Robertson. Robertson is a pending restricted free agent who’s about to be handsomely paid.

There are also rumblings of the Senators making a move for a defenseman possibly Flyers Rasmus Ristolainen or another right-shot d-man.

If there’s a silver-lining, though Sens fans likely won’t want to hear it right now, the team possesses over $25 million in cap space, and is in a position to make a bang at next weekend’s Entry Draft and free agency July 1.

Brady Tkachuk leaves Ottawa appearing in 572 regular season games, registering 213 goals, 250 assists, adding four goals, three assists in 10 postseason outings.

I think the Sens are in a great spot. Brady was acting like a mercenary and needed to be sent packing. All of that draft capital and cap space make it possible to fill multiple holes. They’re now where Buffalo was 2 years ago. Just on the cusp and with the right moves, put themselves in contention for a top 3 spot in the Atlantic. Buffalo won it last year, but seem to be shedding players that they can’t afford. Tampa and Florida are getting older. Boston is just treading water. Detroit seems to be in a shambles with Larkin wanting out. Leafs are retooling and not sure where they’re heading. Montreal will be the team to beat this year, after a run to the Conference final. They too have a wealth of young talent and with Carolina winning their Cup Championship, they might lose a bit of the edge. The Metro is putrid and really not a threat, with the exception of Carolina. It’s going to be a battle this year, with most of the Atlantic ready to fight to the death. Ottawa is in the mix. Good luck.
