Kane Passes On Buffalo Homecoming 

Three-time Stanley Cup Champion Patrick Kane will not be joining his hometown team, the Buffalo Sabres. 

The 37-year-old winger signed a two-year, $16 million contract to return to the Chicago Blackhawks. Kane, who is arguably the best American-born player in National Hockey League history, is rejoining the club he starred with in Chicago for sixteen seasons from 2007-2023. The gifted forward has scored 508 goals and 1400 points in his 19-year NHL career. 

Multiple National Hockey League insiders, including NHL on TNT analyst and former Hawk Chris Chelios, had reported in recent weeks that Kane had narrowed his choices for his next destination. 

Per Chelios, Kane had been considering either a reunion in Chicago or joining the Sabres. In the end, the Sabres could not match the price tag of the contract offered to the future Hall of Fame scorer in the Windy City. 

Although Kane is no longer in his prime, he can still be a key contributor and veteran leader for a Chicago club looking to take a step forward in the upcoming season. 

As for Buffalo, the reigning Atlantic Division Champions have been exploring avenues to replace the scoring now lost with the departure of top winger Alex Tuch earlier this summer. 

Although Kane only scored two power-play goals for the Red Wings last season, he collected seventeen assists on the man advantage, which finished the 25-26 campaign in the ninth position. While the Western New York native brings with him challenges in his five-on-five and defensive zone play, his ability to contribute in extra-man situations remains valuable. 

With the addition of Kane now off the table in Buffalo, the power play continues to be a significant cause of concern going forward. The Sabres finished last season with a mark of just 19.5% on the man advantage for a ranking of twenty-one out of thirty- two NHL teams. As the puck drop for the start of the 2026-2027 schedule draws ever closer It’s becoming increasingly likely that reinforcements to the forward group are not coming. 

If the club is going to bolster its power play numbers, the solution will have to be found within the current roster.
