Rick Tocchet’s Philadelphia Flyers (3-7-4) are n DC on Wednesday to take on Spencer Carbery’s Washington Capitals (6-4-0).
The Flyers are playing their third game in four nights. The Capitals have been off since a 4-3 home overtime win against the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday.
On Tuesday, the flyers overcame a 3-0 deficit after the first period. They rallied over the final 40 minutes to force overtime. Unfortunately, they coughed up a pair of 2-on-0 breakaways in sudden death. Dan Vladar bailed them out on the first one. On the second, Kent Johnson ended the match.

Team Toyota Flyers Spotlight: Tocchet laces into his team
Rick Tocchet was not a happy man after his team’s atrocious first period on Tuesday. He laced into his players at the first intermission for their listless, sloppy play in the atrocious first period.
“Play north!” This was a major point that Tocchet raised after the first period on Tuesday — and multiple times over the first 14 games of the season. The Flyers get themselves in trouble when they try to play a lateral game or move the puck backward to reload.
That was the difference between the first period and the final 40 minutes of regulation. Philly got pucks to the net and bodies in front. When they play too east-west or especially when they played a disconnected and slow-paced game, they get into trouble.
The Flyers have scored at least one power play marker in each of the last four games. The adjustment to move Travis Zegras from the right half boards to the left side has given the power play a shot in the arm so far.

Behind Enemy Lines: Capitals Look to Get on Course
For his part, Spencer Carbery has also been less-than-thrilled with his own team’s execution on the early going of the season. The Capitals have been uncharacteristically sloppy at times as they incorporate various new players into the roster. Offensively, Alex Tuch (7g, 2a) and Dylan Strome (3g, 6a) share the team lead with nine points apiece. Youngster Ryan Leonard (4g, 4a) and veteran newcomer Jordan Kyrou (2g, 6a) have six points apiece. On the blueline, Jacob Chychrun has just one goal so far but he’s posted seven points overall.

Flyers: Tuesday’s Postgame Reaction

60th Anniversary: Today in Flyers History
If ever an NHL player truly “had an opposing team’s number” it was goaltender Antero Niittymaki against the Atlanta Thrashers (now Winnipeg Jets). Over the course of his NHL career with the Flyers, Tampa Bay Lightning and San Jose Sharks, Niittymaki had a perfect 17-0-0 record, 1.76 goals against average, .940 save percentage and one shutout.
Most of that incredible record was compiled as a member of the Flyers.
On October 28, 2008, the Flyers breezed to a 7-0 blowout road victory over the Thrashers behind a 24-save shutout by Niittymaki. The Finnish netminder received four goals worth of support from Simon Gagne and Mike Knuble alone, as the two longtime linemates scored twice apiece.
Years later, Niittymaki said of his career-long mastery of the Thrashers, “I don’t know why [it happened] that way, but it was just a coincidence. I know there was some luck in a few of those games. Just one of those things.”
