With training camp for the Montreal Canadiens drawing closer, Habs fans are setting their sights on the upcoming 2026-’27 NHL regular season. That means the Canadiens’ roster is beginning to come more clearly into focus.
General manager Kent Hughes has had another relatively quiet summer, completing just a handful of trades that barely move the needle. There are also a couple of restricted free agents left to sign. While another move can’t be ruled out, the foundation of the Montreal roster appears to be mostly in place.
That raises a number of interesting questions. If this is essentially the team the Canadiens take into the 2026-’27 season, what should fans realistically expect? What could the opening night roster really look like? How far can this group go? Where are its biggest strengths? Are there still enough holes to keep the Canadiens from taking the next step in becoming a perennial contender?
