The Edmonton Oilers gave the media an injury update before the start of training camp. Four players, including free-agent signing Frederik Andersen, would miss training camp this season.
All four players are dealing with injuries and will not take the ice before the regular season. They are Andersen, Mattias Janmark, Matt Savoie, and Alec Regula.
There are definitely some concerns, especially for a player like Andersen. He has struggled to stay healthy in the past. He even left the Stanley Cup Final in June with an injury in Game 3 against the Carolina Hurricanes. However, Oilers GM Stan Bowman isn’t worried at the moment.
“We’re not worried about this,” he said last week, via Sportsnet. “This is part of the sport, and we’ll work our way through it. And there’s an opportunity, probably, for someone else to get a better look than they may otherwise would have.”
Oilers Injury List Topped by Andersen and Savoie
The most notable players included on the list are Andersen and forward Matt Savoie. Andersen is expected to be the Oilers’ starting goaltender once he’s ready to take the ice. Savoie, a younger player, is looking to earn a full-time role in the NHL for a second straight season.
“Matt’s going to miss less time than Freddie. Also, Freddie’s older. So we’re probably not going to be pushing the envelope, trying to probably give him enough time,” Bowman said. “Matt, I don’t want to put a timeline on it, but it’s not like he’s going to miss half a season or anything like that. It’s going to be much less than that. Probably around training camp, we’ll have a better timeline on things.”
The Oilers certainly want these players back on the ice as soon as possible. The good news is that none of them will miss significant time with whatever injuries they have. Edmonton begins its 2026-27 campaign on September 29th against the Vancouver Canucks.
