We’ll get to the hockey game in the moment. But it was a sad offseason for the Vancouver Canucks. John Garrett, Jim Robson, and John Mckechie all passed away during the off-season. Dan Murphy, John Shorthouse and John Garrett addressed the topic before the second period of Vancouver’s 9-7 loss to Edmonton on Thursday.
I will always remember Shorthouse talking about Cheech, Halford and Brough on the old 650 show on the morning of the announcement of Garrett’s passing. Clearly, he was devastated. That awful feeling doesn’t go away that easily.
As for the game, it had the feel of an old-school 80’s game.9-7. The first half of the game was all Oilers Scoring at will. Powerplay. Shorthanded. Even strength. The shots were 20-4 Oilers. And the Oilers fans in Rogers Arena made it feel like Rogers Centre in Edmonton.
You have to give the Canucks credit. As Ferraro said through the broadcast, they were shell-shocked. Especially after two shorthanded goals on the same power play by McDavid and Kapinen to end Kevin Lankinen’s night. They started to sustain some pressure in the second half of the second period. They did have success against the pairing of Shakir Mukhamadullin and Jake Walman. At the end of the night, Mukhamadullin was on the ice for 4 goals. Walman for 3. And they got a buzzer-beater from Arshdeep Bains that, dare I say, gave them momentum.
They didn’t complete the comeback. But there are good takeaways. One, they battled and played as a team. They did have nine scoring chances And perhaps the most significant goal was this one-timer from EP40. A confident shot. He is off to a good start this year.
The other good takeaway was the crowd. As mentioned, the first half of the period was a very pro-Oilers crowd. But in the third, the Canuck fans in the building were as loud as they have been for a while.
On another bright spot, Adam Novotny continues to turn hends in the OHL. He scored another highlight-reel goal against Erie. Remember, he had two goals and two assists.
