Connor McDavid has broken a 42-year-old NHL record held by Edmonton Oilers legend Wayne Gretzky. The Oilers beat the New York Rangers 4-1 on Sunday for their third straight win. However, they didn’t just win the game; McDavid broke another NHL record.
With 30 assists in 15 games, the Oilers’ captain broke the NHL record as the fastest player to reach 30 assists from the start of an NHL season. McDavid just beat Gretzky’s previous record (16 games).
A look at the fewest games needed for a player to reach 30 assists in a season. Connor McDavid (15 – 2026-27), Wayne Gretzky (16 – 1984-85), Gretzky again (17 – 1987-88), Mario Lemieux (17 – 1988-89), Lemieux again (17 – 1995-96).
McDavid Also Moves Up Goal Scoring List
The Oilers’ captain added another milestone to his already impressive resume, scoring his ninth goal of the season to surpass Oilers legend Glenn Anderson on Edmonton’s all-time goal-scoring list. With 418 career goals, the captain now sits alone in fourth place in franchise history.
Most career goals by an Oilers player in franchise history. Gretzky 583, Jari Kurri 474, Leon Draisaitl 446, McDavid 418, Glenn Anderson 417, Mark Messier 392.
A 200 Point Season Is Possible
With 39 points through his first 15 games, Connor McDavid is on pace for a staggering 225-point campaign, a total that would rewrite the NHL record books.
Wayne Gretzky currently owns the league’s single-season points record with 215, and remains the only player in NHL history to surpass the 200-point plateau. The Oilers legend accomplished that remarkable feat four times during his Hall of Fame career. However, McDavid is putting himself on a trajectory that could challenge one of hockey’s most untouchable records.
Even if McDavid falls short of Gretzky’s record, he has a legitimate shot at joining the 200-point club. He’d become just the second player in NHL history to reach the milestone. Mario Lemieux came closest with 199 points, but McDavid is on pace to surpass that mark and make history. Ultimately, he will need to stay healthy. If he does, then he has as good a chance to break the 200-point mark.
