The Chicago Blackhawks came into Canada Life Centre on Monday night playing solid road hockey — but they could not hold on. A dramatic late tying goal from Cole Perfetti with 39 seconds left in regulation forced overtime, and Mark Scheifele buried the winner at 2:06 of the extra frame to give Winnipeg a 3-2 victory.
This was not a game between two playoff contenders. Both teams sit near the bottom of the NHL standings. But for Chicago, this road trip — now 1-1-2 through four games — had moments of real promise. The Blackhawks were excellent for stretches, and Spencer Knight was outstanding all night long. In the end, the inability to protect a lead in the final minute cost them two crucial points.
It is worth noting that Winnipeg was playing without five regular players due to injury — making this victory even more impressive for the Jets and even more frustrating for a Blackhawks team that had every chance to win this one.
GAME SUMMARY
1st Period — Jets Strike, Hawks Answer Late
Winnipeg opened the scoring at 3:59 when defenseman Dylan Samberg fired his first goal of the season — a wrist shot past Spencer Knight, with assists from Scheifele and Kyle Connor. The Jets capitalized during a 4-on-4 situation after offsetting penalties.
Chicago responded late in the period. With 1:12 left on the clock, Teuvo Teravainen scored his 13th of the season — his third goal in his last two games — to tie it 1-1. Teravainen has been on fire since returning from Milano Cortina 2026, where he won bronze with Finland. Frank Nazar and Connor Bedard picked up the assists. The goal came on a Winnipeg double-minor high-sticking penalty. Period ends 1-1.
2nd Period — Bedard Flying, Hellebuyck Walls Them Out
The scoreboard did not move in the second period — but the game did. Connor Bedard came out of the intermission absolutely flying. If Connor Hellebuyck was not on the ice for Winnipeg, the Blackhawks could easily have built a four-goal lead in the first half of that period.
Chicago outshot Winnipeg 10-7 in the second and generated the better chances. Hellebuyck was the difference. No penalties were called all period. Chicago was content to be tied after 40 minutes on the road. Score after 40 minutes: still 1-1.
3rd Period — Chicago In Front, Jets Storm Back
Just 32 seconds into the third, Ryan Greene scored his 8th of the season — and first goal in nine games — to give Chicago a 2-1 lead. Connor Bedard and Sam Rinzel assisted. The Blackhawks looked in control.
Spencer Knight was absolutely outstanding in the third period. Winnipeg dominated shots 17-6 in the final frame, but Knight made save after save to keep Chicago in front — until the very end.
With Hellebuyck pulled for the extra attacker, Cole Perfetti tied it 2-2 at 19:21 on a 6-on-5. Knight gave up what looked like a soft goal — a shot worth watching again. Scheifele and Logan Stanley assisted. Winnipeg ripped the game out of Chicago’s hands in the final seconds.
Overtime — Defensive Breakdown Costs Chicago
Artyom Levshunov lost his battle along the wall, surrendering the puck. Ryan Greene tried to recover but was intercepted. By the time Levshunov got back, it was too late — a 2-on-1 was the result and Mark Scheifele made no mistake, wiring a wrist shot past Knight at 2:06. Dylan Samberg picked up the assist. Jets win 3-2.
NOTES
Connor Bedard finished with two assists, giving him 115 career assists — matching Eddie Olczyk for the most by a Blackhawks player age 20 or younger.
Bedard recorded his 16th multipoint game of the season — the most by a Chicago player in a single season since Patrick Kane (27) and Alex DeBrincat (22) in 2021-22.
Teuvo Teravainen now has 3 goals in his last 2 games and points in all 4 games since the Olympic break — where he won bronze with Finland at Milano Cortina 2026.
POST COMMENTS
Connor Bedard on the loss: “We didn’t give them too much the first, probably, 50 minutes. I think then they’re pressing late, but we sit back a little bit. I think when you’re defending a lead and you sit back, it’s not a good recipe. We want to try to get in their end and cycle it and whatnot. And I thought we sat back a little bit.”
Coach Jeff Blashill: “I thought both goalies, probably, played really good, to be honest with you. We probably had the better chances. I thought Connor Hellebuyck kept them in, probably, in the first part of the game. And then I thought Spencer did a good job kind of locking the door the last period there when we were kind of on our heels.”
Blashill on the final minutes: “I think that we played really good for lots of the game. I just thought we stopped kind of getting out of our zone clean. So because of that we were in our end for the last 10, 12 minutes maybe, and it’s just a hard way to play. Disappointing for sure. You’ve got to find a way to win the hockey game.”

MY OBSERVATIONS
This one will sting for Chicago — and it should. The Blackhawks played well enough to win this hockey game. Spencer Knight was outstanding. Bedard was dangerous. The team showed real character on the road against a desperate Winnipeg side missing five regulars.
But you simply cannot sit back in the final minutes protecting a one-goal lead. Bedard said it himself — they stopped cycling, stopped getting out of their zone. When you do that against any NHL team with a 6-on-5 coming, bad things happen. That is a lesson this young group needs to learn fast.
The overtime breakdown was equally frustrating. Levshunov losing that board battle is something aN YOUNG defenseman cannot afford. The 2-on-1 that resulted was a direct consequence of a young player making a young mistake. These are the growing pains of rebuilding.
The positives? Bedard continues to be historic. Teravainen is providing real secondary scoring. And Knight — despite the soft goal at the end — gave his team every chance to win. The Blackhawks are not as far away as the standings suggest. But they need to learn to close games. That comes with experience. And experience comes from nights exactly like this one.
NEXT GAME
Chicago Blackhawks — Friday night vs Vancouver Canucks. Return home. This is the final matchup of the season between these two teams. Chicago is 1-0-1 in the series — a win in regulation and a shootout loss. The Blackhawks will want to close the season series strong.
