The Detroit Red Wings have injuries, and they’re starting to pile up. Notably, Mason Appleton is going to miss the rematch against the Boston Bruins. The first game was incredibly physical, consequently Appleton is going to be on the shelf for at least one game.
Detroit needs to stop a four game skid, therefore losing players is going to be an issue. Appleton plays around 13:30 per game, and much of that is in a defensive posture. Those minutes have to be redistributed, yet exactly how remains to be seen. Detroit can ill afford defensive lapses, and Appleton will be missed for his contributions.
Is it time for another callup?
Similarly, Dylan Larkin was absent for at least part of yesterday’s practice. However, Coach Todd McLellan assured everyone that Larkin is good to go for the game. This season’s condensed schedule was concerning in terms of injury, and those concerns are becoming reality.
At this point, Detroit doesn’t need to call anyone up from Grand Rapids. However, a fresh face could do a lot in terms of energizing the room. In particular, Michal Brandsegg-Nygard may be earning another opportunity for an NHL appearance. MBN had a tough start to the year, but as of late is playing well for the Griffins.
Grand Rapids is in the midst of an historic run for the franchise. Standing at 16-1-0-1, the energy surrounding the AHL affiliate is incredible. Players like John Leonard or Dominic Shine could also make an attractive option for the Red Wings. Still, it remains to be seen if the Red Wings will call for reinforcements.
Max Plante gets the call from Team USA
The Red Wings’ prospect pool continues to strengthen, and Max Plante is gaining steam. Plante has 26 points (13g, 13a) in 16 games in the NCAA. Consequently, Plante was invited by Team USA to a preliminary camp for the upcoming World Junior tournament.
Fans will closely watch whether Plante chooses to turn pro after this school year. The 2024 second-round pick brings many of the qualities the Red Wings need on the ice. His defensive game can deliver the same kind of boost that rookie Nate Danielson has provided. With several Detroit prospects breaking out this season, the organization’s future looks increasingly bright.
The Red Wings need to get on track now, and beating Boston has to be the first step. Boston will push them, and Detroit must play nearly flawless defense to keep pace. If the team stumbles through another sloppy first period, they risk stretching this losing streak to five games.
