Flyers Daily: August 31, 2026

On this week’s Monday with Meltzer edition of Flyers Daily, Jason Myretetus and I go into the start of September with an overarching look at the NHL offseason. We talk about we have learned in the NHL and about how the Flyers can succeed in the league this season.

There was more liquidity in the salary cap this summer. Correspondingly, GMs went on a spending spree. Meanwhile, numerous star players with no-movement clauses leveraged them to request trades and tie their general managers’ hands. It’s impossible to get maximum value when one one or two destinations are available.

The recent contract of Cale Makar, Mackin Celebrini, Leo Carlsson and eventual deal for Quinn Hughes raised the salary bar very high. We discuss how this affects team building in what eventually become a 34-team NHL team league. Additionally, we talk about the players vs. owners balance of power, Flyers defense prospects, and much more.

Team Toyota Flyers Prospect Countdown: Cole Knuble (#7)

The skinny: Notre Dame struggled this past season. Unfortunately, it also affected Knuble’s ability to produce, too. He took a statistical step backward from 2024-25. However, he played individually better than his numbers might suggest. After his season ended, Knuble turned pro and joined the Phantoms.

Knuble played both wing and center during his late-season stint with the Phantoms. In late March, he signed his entry-level contract and made his AHL debut in late March. The versatile forward initially started on the right wing with linemates Jacob Gaucher and Anthony Richard. Subsequently, he shifted over to center.

After the season, Knuble later noted that moving back to center in the AHL required some adjustments, particularly with faceoffs. Ge had finished his college career at Notre Dame playing on the wing.

Knuble is physically smaller than his father, two-stint Flyers Alum winger Mike Knuble. However, like his dad, Cole Knuble, he’s a savvy two-way player with the potential to be an effect complement to different types of linemats. He has NHL top-nine potential. Failing that, he could also become a serviceable fourth-line type. Time will tell if he’s better at center, wing or a hybrid role.
