Islanders: A Look at DeBoer’s Coaching System

The New York Islanders hired Peter DeBoer as head coach on April 5, 2026. They Isles believe that the coaching change might help them make the playoffs this time around.

However, the team will need a significant jump to attain that goal. The ended up finishing 12th in the Eastern Conference, seven points out of the wildcard spot last season.Coaching History 

This will be the first full season the Islanders will have DeBoer as their head coach. DeBoer’s most recent head coaching stint was with the Dallas Stars from June 2022 to June 2025. He has spent this offseason getting acclimated to his new team, and fans are eager to see what the team will look like under his tenure this season. 

DeBoer’s past coaching history shows a clear record of getting immediate results from his players. Islanders fans are looking for these results that DeBoer will hopefully be able to pull from the team. Having a head coach like DeBoer, who has visited the Western Conference Finals five times out of his last seven coaching seasons, could lead to the team’s success in a competitive Eastern Conference. 

The Islanders are heading into the 2026-27 season after losing out on a playoff spot. They have also lost their former captain and are undergoing multiple coaching changes.

Systems: DeBoer vs. Roy

DeBoer’s coaching system differs significantly from the Islanders’ former coach, Patrick Roy. 

Roy’s system focused more on individual skill and fast, aggressive breakouts. This often led to a slower transition on the ice when the team couldn’t move the puck as quickly or efficiently as they wanted. This system also leaned heavily on their core players, which led to an uneven distribution of ice time across the forwards. Uneven ice distribution often exposed the gaps when those core players were injured or tired. 

DeBoer’s system is a more structured style of play, relying on controlling zone entries and breakaways. To achieve this, the Islanders will focus on isolating space on the ice, thus spreading out their opponents.

DeBoer’s system isn’t entirely rigid, though. The offensive zone will be where they can focus on aggressive shooting with players positioned near the crease for higher conversion rates. 

In the 2025-26 season, the Islanders averaged 14.51 turnovers per game. With DeBoer’s system, the team will hopefully see fewer puck turnovers. 

It’s hard to say just yet what to expect from this Islanders team under new leadership, but hopefully this big change brings a new, invigorated effort from the Islanders.
