The Philadelphia Flyers signed 25-year-old Nolan Foote to a one-year, two-way contract on Wednesday. It’s a depth move for the organization; no more, no less. However, it’s notable because of the power forward’s backstory.
Nolan Foote is the son of longtime NHL defenseman Adam Foote and the younger brother of former NHL defenseman Cal Foote. Both Cal and Nolan are former first-round Draft picks. Tampa Bay drafted Cal 14th overall in 2017. Two years later, the Bolts chose Nolan 29th overall in the 2019 Entry Draft.
Cal Foote’s 145-game NHL career effectively ended when he was indicted in the Hockey Canada sexual assault scandal. A free agent this summer, he spent the 2025-26 season in the American Hockey League with the Chicago Wolves. On July 28, 2026, Foote signed a one year contract with Färjestad BK of the Swedish Hockey League (SHL). Two days later, on July 30, 2026, the team announced that they had rescinded the contract, making Foote a free agent again.
Nolan Foote, the younger brother, was a teammate of Cal’s with the WHL’s Kelowna Rockets. He spent the 2025-26 season with the Florida Panthers and their American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the Charlotte Checkers. Overall, he appeared in 12 NHL games (1g) and 54 AHL games (14g-18a, 32pts) this past season.
Nolan, a 6-foot-3, 201-pound forward has played professionally over parts of the last six seasons (2021-26). Meanwhile, he split time between the NHL and AHL. At the top level, he has totaled 10 points (7g-3a) in 42 career NHL games with Florida and New Jersey. One step down. he has posted 161 ponts (76g-85a) in 245 career AHL games with Charlotte and Utica.
Before turning professional, the Denver, CO native played three seasons of junior hockey with the Kelowna Rockets of the Western Hockey League (WHL) from 2017-20. He represented the club as captain in his final season in 2019-20.
Nolan Foote won the gold medal with Canada at the 2020 IIHF World Junior Championship, adding five points (3g-2a) in seven tournament games. For these reasons, he draws more attention than the typical AHL/NHL depth signing. However, much like Jack Stundnicka, he’s likely an insurance piece for the Flyers and a regular for the Lehigh Valley Phantoms.

Flyers Youth: Pronman Ranks Philly 11th
The Philadelphia Flyers ranked No. 11 in Corey Pronman’s 2026 NHL Pipeline Rankings on The Athletic. Take such ranking in general with a grain of salt. In Pronman’s case, take it with a fistful of rock salt. He forms very early opinions on players and is rarely one to deviate much from his initial like or dislike of a player. Jan Levine tackled that very topic in his Wednesday blog for the New York Rangers.
At any rate, Pronman’s Phlly evaluation is steeped in the belief the system offers a promising but decidedly top-heavy future for the organization. He did note the evolving depth at center. Like most, he loves the top young wingers and questions the ceilings of the defensement in the system. That’s not unfair. It’s a concensus opinion. I think the defense is better than credited: no slam-dunk types but a few who could surprise.
The system is spearheaded by Porter Martone (No. 1) and Matvei Michkov (No. 2). These Michkov, entering his third pro year, is a bit divisive but Pronman is a believer. He also note organization depth and size at center. Jack Nesbitt ranks as the No. 3 player in the pipeline. Standing 6-foot-5, his physical, reliable 200-foot game is highly regarded. However, skating and physical strength remain areas for future improvement.
