On Monday, the Flyers skated to a 3-1 home win over the Buffalo Sabres at Xfinity Mobile Arena. Matvei Michkov led the way with power play and even strength goals (5th and 6th of the season), Noel Acciari notched his first tally as a Flyer. Joseph Woll (24 saves) earned his first win.

Team Toyota Flyers Spotlight: Zegras on the left half boards

Two games ago, Tocchet made a strategic adjustment to the long-suffering Flyers power play. He moved the left-handed shooting Trevor Zegras from the right hall boards to the left. Being able to skate “downhill” with the puck with his stick angled on his natural side has opened up Zegras’ effectiveness on the power play at least so far.

Meanwhile, Matvei Michkov has the right flank to himself and the ability to roam the offensive zone.

It’s not a cure-all but the power play adjustment has helped so far.

Behind Enemy Lines: Thompson and Quinn

Through the first nine games of the 2026-27 season, the Buffalo Sabres have scored 27 goals. They’ve yielded 34. Meanwhile, among the 27 tallies to date, Tage Thomson (5g, 9 points) and Jack Quinn (5g, 9 points) combined for 10. Moreover, among the 27 overall goals, Thompson and/or Quinn have figured in 18 via goal or assist.

Thompson has recorded at least one point in six of the nine games to date. When he does not get on the scoresheet, the Sabres are 1-2-0. Meanwhile, Quinn has at least one point in five on nine matches. His team is 1-2-1 when he’s held off the score sheet.

Drafted by the Flyers in the third round, 71 st overall, of the 1993 NHL Draft, Czech forward Vaclav Prospal came directly to North America at age 18 and developed at the American Hockey League level with the Hershey Bears and Philadelphia Phantoms.

It took Prospal until the stretch drive of the 1996-97 season to finally crack the NHL with the Flyers. He went on to play 1,108 games in the NHL, including two stints with the Flyers.

On October 21, 1997, a rookie Prospal had one of the best games of his early career. Skating right wing on the Flyers’ revised top line with Eric Lindros (one goal, four assists) and John LeClair (one goal, one assist), Prospal racked up four points (two power plays, two assists) in a 7-1 romp over the visiting Tampa Bay Lightning at the CoreStates Center.

Young offensive defenseman Janne Niinimaa (one goal, two assists) also enjoyed a big game.
