Flyers Quick Hits: Salary Cap Space, Myrtetus Tourney, Summer Showcase

After the Flyers signed Cam York to a new five-year contract on Monday, the team had $370,238 of salary cap space for 2025-26 according to Puckpedia and $227,739 per Capwages. It depends on roster composition. At any rate, the Flyers’ offseason signings appear done for now.

If the Flyers make a trade that required taking on added salary obligations or if they add a yet-unsigned free agent — neither of which are on the horizon currently — they have some ways to comply with the start-of-season salary cap. For example, waiving goaltender Ivan Fedotov and assigning him to the AHL’s Lehigh Valley Phantoms would add $1.15 million of open cap space (the remainder of his $3.25 million cap hit would remain on the cap). Alternatively, the Flyers if had to, they could use long-term injured reserve allowance for defenseman Ryan Ellis or, depending on how much time he’ll miss, Rasmus Ristolainen.

Ideally, LTIR won’t be necessary. The Flyers now have all of their restricted free agents under contract for 2025-26.

2025 Summer Showcase: Flyers candidates

The 2025 World Junior Summer Showcase will be held from July 25 to August 2 at Ridder Arena in Minneapolis, Minnesota, from July 25. The annual eevent serves as an early evaluation venue for under-20 players from the U.S., Canada, Finland, and Sweden. All participating players are candidates for their respective national team rosters for the 2025-26 IIHF World Junior Championship. The WJC will also be held in Minnesota.

Rosters have not yet been announced. However, there are numerous prospective candidates affiliated with the Flyers.

Canada: Jett Luchanko (2024-25 WJC participant), Porter Martone, Spencer Gill
USA: Carter Amico (injury recovery), Jack Murtagh, Shane Vansaghi
Sweden: Jack Berglund (2024-25 WJC selection, withdrew due to injury)
Finland: Heikki Ruohonen (204-25 WJC selection), Max Westergard

The USNTDP-trained trio of Amico, Murtagh and Vansaghi may be longshots for the 2025-26 WJC (in Amico’s case, because he missed most of last season due to injury, costing himself a projected first-round selection spot in the 2025 NHL Entry Draft). However, they may be able to build a case for themselves. Additionally, Flyers 2025 fifth-round pic Westergard could get on the Team Finland radar in similar fashion to how Ruohonen carved out a roster spot for himself last year.

Cancer Warriors 3-on-3 tourney for Jason Myrtetus

Our friends from Chirping Pucks media organized the Cancer Warriors 3-on-3 tournament in honor of Flyers Daily host Jason Myrtetus on July 12, 2025. The tournament will be held at the Flyers Training Center in Voorhees.

All proceeds from the tourney go to Jason and his family. Jason, as most Flyers fans know, has been battling colon cancer for the last year. He decided to make his fight public in order to raise awareness throughout the community.

Frankie James of Chirping Pucks explained how the idea hockey tournament came about.

“To me, it’s a personal issue. My father dealt with cancer. It creates not just emotional struggle but also a huge financial burden on families. Jason is a fixture in the hockey community as well as the broadcasting world. So this is something he can do to show support. The response has been tremendous,” James said.

In addition to the 3-on-3 tournament for Jason, which is strictly a not-for-profit event, Chirping Pucks hosts a variety of hockey tournaments and related events throughout the year. Women’s hockey tourneys are one of their main specialites.

“We try to make it as cost-friendly as possible to teams and players,” James said. “Hockey is an expensive sport to play and being players ourselves, we come back to the question of “what’s it for the teams? What’s in it for the players? Is this something affordable?’ In the case of Jason’s tournament, what’s in it for the players is to have a good time and also support a member of the hockey community and his family.”

On Wednesday night at 8 p.m. EDT, Jason will be the guest on the Chirping Pucks podcast. He’ll discuss the Cancer Warriors 3-on-3 tournament, his promising prognosis, what he’s learned from the journey and his advice to others. All proceeds from the tourney go to Jason and his family. Jason, as most Flyers fans know, has been battling colon cancer for the last year. He decided to make his fight public in order to raise awareness throughout the community.
