ParticipantHere’s some observations from the first period:
Lines/Defense Pairs:
Dvorak-Couturier-Konecny
Grebenkin-Cates-Brink
Tippett-Zegras-Michkov
Abols-Luchanko-HathawayYork-Sanheim
Seeler-Drysdale
Ginning-JuulsenVladar
Ersson (backup)Flyers and Devils are tied 1-1. Shots were 11-9 PHI for the period.
-Flyers got an early power-play with Luke Glendening off for slashing. Their second man-advantage unit, handled by Cam York was able to move the puck more freely than the first unit with Jamie Drysdale.
-There were several defensive zone shifts where the Flyers effectively utilized the Box Plus One, including one where they kept the Devils to one side of the ice (specifically from the left post to the perimeter).
-So far, the Adam Ginning-Noah Juulsen pairing isn’t exactly playing to rave reviews. Miscommunication and a Juulsen turnover on one of their shifts. Juulsen is very slow afoot.
-If you’re trying to see what Jett Luchanko has, you’d like for him to be playing higher in the lineup. While Rodrigo Abols has had a solid preseason, there’s a cap on what offensive risk taking Luchanko can do with the fourth line. Good news, Luchanko did good work coming off the wall to find Travis Sanheim on the game tying goal.
-And speaking of Sanheim, he and Cam York continue to put together excellent shifts together as a pairing.

ParticipantFlyers and Devils are tied 2-2 after 40 minutes.
Goals by Lenni Hameenaho (NJ) and Travis Konency (PHI)
Shots were 10-4.
Second Period Observations:
-Despite the tie, the Flyers carried play in the period against a Devils lineup that looked decidedly AHL in quality,
-An early penalty killing unit mistake as Devils center Kevin Rooney is left open at the goal mouth. Shane Lachance finds him for a quick shot that beats Dan Vladar. Never good to leave your goalie alone even if you’re a man down.
-Trevor Zegras’ offensive IQ was on full display with an audacious in-between the legs pass to a streaking Owen Tippett in the neutral zone that led to a Flyers scoring chance.
-The Flyers first power-play unit worked quickly following a delay of game penalty on the Devils’ Topias Vilen. Matvei Michkov smartly picked up on an intentional wide shot by Jamie Drysdale, worked behind the net, and quickly got the puck to Travis Konecny on the game tying goal.
Shortly after, they nearly took the lead, after Christian Dvorak chipped the puck to generate a three on two odd man rush. Sean Couturier nearly scores but Jake Allen somehow gets across to keep it out.

If Jett makes the team as a 4th line player, do you feel he’d be better off in the OHL (on a much improved team from last year) playing top minutes or playing the 4th line grinder for the Flyers?

ParticipantThree wins in PS, none in regulation, all in shootouts. Gilbert gets waived, roster is set. Grebenkin, Abols, Luchanko, Juulsen, Ginning make the roster. We’ll see how it goes.

ParticipantTippett looks lost on the ice. He had decent chemistry with TK last season. Once Martone was drafted, good chance Tippett does not see the second half of his contract extension as a Flyer.

KeymasterI want to see Luchanko in more attacking situations.

I think being on the Flyers 4th line is not in the best interests for his development but on the other hand Briere doesn’t have to explain how Jett “blew him away from day 1 last year” and made the roster while sending him back this year.
He should be in the OHL on a much improved team getting top minutes.
You also have to think Tortorella coaching anybody last year wasn’t in anybody’s best interest.
Tortorella’s record number of line changes
It’s a shame DB couldn’t find a way to bring back Torts this year, i guess even DB couldn’t cover up Torts abusing players and quitting on the team no matter how much he tried.
