yes its me 2050ParticipantAlways love how these writers throw the “rebuilding” word in every article. There was and never has been a rebuild. This guy in every paragraph talks about the “rebuild”. Must be on the payroll
Anyway. No, they don’t have the players to fix the defense. Even healthy it is a bottom 10 unit easily. They have no real help anytime soon outside of bonk and who knows how far away before he can help. Any real help will have to come via a trade. Which means you will have to give to get. Danny doesn’t seem inclined yet to do that as he “loves” his team. Who is even available at this stage that can help now and in the future. Then who do the flyers have with value that they will move?
Right now, the flyers have 2 guys they can move forward with on D (maybe 3 if you want to include JD) if they want to contend at some point. The rest are fodder. Maybe Andrae can be a 3rd pair guy. Either way they have a lot to do in terms of addressing and fixing the defense. Then add in Sanheim will continue to age and his play will start to naturally drop. Pretty bleak on the blueline to me. Which tells me they will overpay in free agency for secondary pieces who they will prop up as top end pieces. Like Trouba.
He really didn’t offer any solutions to fix the problem.

The solution is the same solution they’ve used for years… overspend on free agents and kick the can down the road another year or two. And with nothing of quality in the system, it’s pretty much the only path they can take.
What I also like is constantly seeing when Ristolainen is healthy, that seemingly changes everything. At this point in his career, he’s a bottom-pairing defenseman (and that’s only if his body doesn’t have its annual breakdown), yet his name is spoken in such reverent tones, you’d think he was destined for the Hockey Hall of Fame.

If they’re a bottom 10 unit, why have they gotten Top 10 results in 3 games against the two best teams in the conference? The defense is hardly in crisis. They are in hold the fort mode with two of their top 4 Dmen out injured. Perhaps you’re aware of this. The fort is holding. There are teams out there that literally can’t play defense. The Flyers aren’t one of them, banged up or not. Their 6-9 defensemen (Andrea, Ginning, Juulsen, Zamula) have put up a combined +1 in 3 games against top notch opponents. Minnesota’s top 4 defensemen have put up a combined -16 in 4 games. Can you imagine the reaction in Negadelphia if the Flyers gave up 7 to Columbus in their home opener, blew a 3 goal lead in the 3rd period at home to LA and fell behind 3-0 to Dallas by the first minute of the 2nd Period? Would Minnesota’s defense be in crisis? It’s going to be fun Saturday.

Wow 3 games. Let’s plan the parade. They will be a bottom 10 unit come April. Goalies saving them right now, no? The defense stinks. They have got hemmed in 2 out of the 3 games. Outplayed 2 of the 3. outshot. Doesn’t matter who is out injured. They still are not a good unit overall. Hold the fort until what? Risto the legit top pair dman returns? Get the fuck out of here with his crap. 2 best teams, add some context next time.
Back to the Minnesota nonsense. Just say you do not like buium. 10 of the 15 goals the wild scored have been on the PP. seems like a team issue not an isolated 1 player defensive issue; which is what you mean. Take those top 4 on minny any day over the flyers slop you mention and then some.
Seeing how you are infatuated with buium. Buium with 5 pp points in 4 games. Flyers def do not need that type on production when you have Makhughes, I mean JD on D and the jett killing it on the 4th line. Still very very early to compare the jett and buium. See how it plays out by the end of the year. Won’t hold my breath as to who will be a more impactful player. Now and in the future.
There is no negdelphia. Just realist observations and facts. How you can continue to suck the cock of this organization is very noble. Are you an employee? Its ok to not try to defend them every time.

the “irreplacable” risto.
Seeing what’s out there and who would want to come to the flyers would it shock any if they re-sign the irreplaceable Risto? Assuming he comes back and plays the year injury free. Probably give Gudas a 5 year contract if he makes it to free agency.

ParticipantWhen the Flyers have been a relevant contender, the blueline usually was built thru draft picks and savvy trades. I’ll start with ’96-’97 blueline- Desjardins (trade), Therien (draft pick), Niinimaa (draft pick), Svoboda (trade), Dykhuis (trade), Coffey (trade), Samuelsson (free agent signing). ’10-’11 blueline – Kimmo (trade), Coburn (trade), Pronger (trade), Carle (trade), Meszaros (trade), O’Donnell (free agent signing).
There are plenty of lean years with brutal bluelines, no doubt. However, building a top tier blueline can be built thru using all assets available to the GM. It is up to the GM not to over value his talent level found within the organization during his tenure. At the present time even with every Dman healthy currently in the organization, this blueline cannot be built into a top tier level. It is not all bad, but needs upgrades. It will be imperative for Briere to be savvy in the trade market. With the cap rising, the free agent market will have very few difference making options over the next few summers.

First off, go fuck yourself. Any responsible board would have kicked your mentally ill pussy ass to the curb a lot time ago. What’s with the constant homophobic slurs? Did your dad sodomize you when you were five? Were you disappointed when he stopped? Get back on your meds asshole.
I already said I started watching MIN more closely because of Buium but haven’t mentioned him specifically because MIN is so awful as a team defensively. This is not complicated, even for you.

Indeed, it can be. But…
Other than the trade for Niskanen (oddly enough, a Fletcher move), when was the last time a Flyers GM pulled off a move that actually improved the blue line? It’s been well over a decade, and to this point, the only significant moves Briere has made is salary cap dumps for very late first round picks.

You can build your D via trades/free agents to an extent. Still need your inhouse players (quality ones) to be the base. Times have changed drastically since those days.
The key as you said is your GM making savy trades. Knowing when to sell high and who to move while still having value. Not to fall in live with their players/prospects. I have very little faith in the winder twins in this area.

ParticipantDrafting a franchise defenseman was and still should be the way to save this blueline. Trades, sure but having that guy makes everyone else’s job easier. Especially the first few years when he’s on an entry level contract which frees up money to improve the team around him. The Flyers will never and have never believed in value. The best bang for the buck. During Sniders years, they just outspent everyone else. Holmgren did the same thing during the early salary cap years which is why Hextall inherited a team with no cap space and no assets. Holmgren spent them all to win now, and when win now fails, someone has to clean it up and it’s usually not the person who spent like a frat boy.
Fletcher did the same thing. Gave out those 8 year contracts, traded for and doubled down on Risto (the Flyers got horrible ROI on fletcher from Ghost going on to score 200 pts in the last 5 years to risto being demoted to 3rd line and always being injured). To put that in perspective, although Sanheim may be a better defensive defenseman, Ghost has nearly doubled him in points while playing 20 min a night and because of the way the Flyers misevaluated him on the ice and mistreated him in the media, they couldn’t give him away. Garolina got for only 3 mill/yr a 50 pt defenseman who scores 29 pp points a year. That’s value, that’s value and skillset missing from the Flyers. I’m sure he had no interest in coming back but whose fault is that especially if they never even reached out? But Risto? 5 years, a complete makeover, totally stripping him of any offensive ability, but one hell of a PR campaign, is going to save the Flyers blueline when he returns.
You want to save the blueline, sell the team, clear out the front office and for once, because nobody outside of the Flyers bubble cares about it, bury forever Flyers hockey and enter the 21st century. They need execs who will draft a franchise Dman and a franchise center, not just make noises about needing them.
