Not sure where this rumor came from, I know it was mentioned in the Hockey News, but it would be one of the dumbest trades made in recent memory.

    Kadri for Rielly

Sign Grzelcyk (2.5) and Roslovic (2.50

    Knies-Matthews-Maccelli
    Tavares-Kadri-Nylander
    Dom-Roslovic-Roy
    McMann-Laughton-Lorentz

    McCabe-Tanev
    OEL-Carlo
    Benoit-Grzelcyk

If you set aside, for the moment, that now in particular would be a bad time to make a trade since there’s no one available to take Rielly’s place. Like if they’d gone after Gavrikov (and I do understand that he had eyes only for the Rangers), then Rielly would be an expendable piece – although I don’t know who’s providing offense out of that D without Rielly there. But there’s nothing there.

A straight Kadri <-> Rielly deal wouldn’t be _that_ bad if you had a replacement for Rielly. It would still be a bad trade, though just because of their age difference and the fact that Kadri’s decline should speed up significantly over the next few years.

For Leaf fans, I’m pretty sure the appeal around Kadri is that he’s the type of player that line 2 needs – gritty, wins battles, still offensive enough to belong – and Rielly is frustrating to watch because he’s just not a very good defenseman. You still need puck movement from the back-end, though, and Rielly is basically the only one providing that.

Using visual data from AllThreeZones, it basically says what we know: Rielly isn’t good at defense and Kadri is still pretty good. I think the decision – were this real (and I sincerely don’t think it is) would be based on what you need more and for how long you need it because Kadri would be a risky acquisition at his age and carrying that term.

Dumb for Calgary, yes. He’s their #1 center. If they trade him now for a pylon like Rielly, they’d be throwing in the towel before the season even started. And they missed the playoffs on a tie breaker. Considering how bad the Flames were when Treliving left (and how bad they’ll be once he’s done destroying this team), I doubt they’d throw him a get out of jail free card.

The only way a trade for Rielly works is if he ends up in Vancouver or Seattle and the Leafs get Jamie Oleksiak or Tyler Myers to plug the hole. It’s the only two places close enough to his hometown that would allow him to consider leaving his settled home of Toronto. But management doesn’t have the balls or the brains to make it work or happen.

Regardless of the worry about puck movement, Rielly absolutely sucks defensively. The Leafs could sign an average LHD (Matt Grzelcyk) and still be better off so long as their D-core wasn’t deployed in a stupid manner like leaning heavy on the top pair such as 25/20/15. The Leafs blueline is old, overrated and unbalanced (not enough real RHD). The only way they’ll make it work (with or without Rielly) is by keeping everybody at roughly the same ice time so nobody has to shoulder too much of the load and having 3LHD/3RHD so nobody has to be out of position.

Kadri + Andersson for Rielly + Carlo + some sweetner

    Then get rid of Reaves/Kampf

    No chance that happens.

Kadri and Andersson are huge pieces of value to their team. They would expect a way bigger return.

Also, no chance Rielly is waiving to go to Calgary. Vancouver or Seattle, maybe. Not Calgary.

No to Carlo being moved. It would need to someone else like the right to Niemela or possibly Danforth.
You keep Reaves and you pass him through waivers. He gets claimed, –ok, if not, he’ll only cost the Leafs under $250k toward the cap.
    Kampf, Jornkrok can be moved.
Robertson is going to arbitrations so he’ll cost imo under $2M on 1 year contract, so the Leafs will about 3M left to play with as is.

I really do like the idea of getting those 2 players from Calgary.

Kadri + Andersson for Rielly + Niemela or Rifai or Prokop + Kampf + a 2nd rnd pick in 2028

Why Not? I think it’s just as close as Seattle is. You know something, you are forgetting about Tessa. Does she really what to live
in those two cities? I think Calgary is just as appealing as the other two you mentioned.

I would need a hell of a Leafs offer to pry those two out of Calgary.
I know my offer above is crap.

Calgary isn’t even remotely close to Vancouver compared to Seattle. Seattle is like a 2-3 hour drive. Calgary is more than 10 hours.

Kadri is their #1 option at center. He’s not getting traded unless they tank the season and move him at the deadline. But he won’t get traded now unless they decide they’ve already given up on the season in July. Considering they missed the playoffs on a tiebreaker, it’s not happening.

Andersson is a very coveted RHD. If they can’t sign him, he’s getting traded for a boatload at the deadline too.

It’s the ultimate in stupidity in the sense that there is zero chance Rielly waives to go to a fringe team like Calgary.

But, if you can somehow (you can’t) get rid of 5 years of a useless, overpaid, underperforming Rielly at $7.5M for 4 years of a somewhat useful Kadri for $7M, you do that all day.

Kadri fills a bigger hole in the FWD group than the hole created in the D group by moving Rielly. But there is no chance in hell this trade happens 1 for 1.

Send Rielly to Van for Jake DeBrusk.

    Knies, Matthews, Domi/Macelli
    DeBrusk, Tavares, Nylander
    McMann, Roy, Macelli/Domi
    Lorentz, Laughton, Pezz

    McCabe, Tanev
    OEL, Carlo
    Benoit, Myers/Topi Niemela/Matt Benning

    Addition by substraction.

I dont think van does that deal.
Also, the minute you move out morgan, you need another top 4 D to replace him.
Our D core is old, Tanev and OEL are always questionable to survive the season. You need another top 4 or two to push them down and be able to give them days off.
